I like to cook rhubarb up like applesauce and eat it on toast. Yummy. But it can take lots of sugar. Some rhubarb is very tart.

Ya'll are making me hungry. Guess I'll have to make a run to the store on the way home. hmmmm
Patti:I get rutabagas, parsnips and turnips mixed up.
A ruta what know?
I know what parsnips are since Jodie or Mark or both used them in their crockpot recipes on QOL. I had to look them up. I made Jodie's recipe. Yummy.
Kris:A ruta what know?
Kris rutabagas are in the root crop family. Very large in comparison to other root crops with a slightly thick peel. Can be hard to peel but very yummy when sliced and boiled with salt, pepper, and butter. They are also good to mix with parsnips and potatoes and cook together. Not sure but I think it may be more of a southern thing.
Kathy, A great story and i hope dessert was great - it amazes me how todays kids do not know a lot of the things that we knew and we are actually losing more each year... But we can teach them as you did her.
For Mother's day I got...RHUBARB!!!
Hubby and the kids just dropped in on a neighbor who has about a jillion plants around his property (Deer deterant). He told them to take what they wanted because his wife rarely uses any. They came home with two big grocery bags full...and now I have a years supply in the freezer! YUMMY!

Lucky , lucky you. I wish I was closer and could share in the wealth!

I always thought that turnips and rutabagas were the same...but rhubarb is delish...it has been ready here for a few weeks now...although we are 3 weeks ahead of schedule garden wise...till the last few days and now we are having touches of snow...the rule of thumb is...never plant till May 24 weekend...for our zone anyway...but Mother Nature likes to fool us sometimes with early summer..

This should make you drool. I double the crumble part because I am greedy. Also I just put the crumble ingredients into the food processor and give a whirl.

Speaking of fruits and vegetables people aren't familiar with, what about tomatillos? A friend makes a great salsa recipe, with lots of tomatillos, avocados and jalapenos.
