I want to make a quilt that is 54"x72". The size of triangles that I want to use is 8" on both sides and 5 3/4" on the bottom. How many triangles do I need to make for the whole quilt? Would a different size triangle work better?

It would probably depend on how the triangles are set together.  Just using rows of triangles with 2 8inch sides together and the point of 1 triangle by the base of another I think 81 triangles.  That would give you a quilt that ended up being 51 3/4 by 72. If you changed the triangle size it 2 8inch sides and 1 6 inch size you would still need 81 triangles but the quilt size would be 54 by 72.

Thinking this his is the layout showing points only.
