Hi all, I'm working on a quilt top that hi lights some really pretty flowered fabrics, 11 of them. I get four 9" pieces out of each for a total of 40 blocks (short on a couple). I'll be setting them 5 across by 8 down with sashing in between. My question is, how wide should the sashing be if the blocks finish at 8.5"? I'd like the blocks to really stand out so I don't want it to be too narrow, too wide would not be good either, I need a "just right sashing" (said the wolf, lol). That would be me. : ) Thanks for any and all suggestions. I'll be sashing with white or off white to hi light the flowered fabrics.
When I do sashing, I lay the blocks out and try different widths till I find what I like. You can spread your sashing fabric out while it's still in one piece. Then lay your blocks on top at maybe an inch apart. See how that looks to you. Then move the blocks farther apart and see how that looks. That will give you an idea of how your finished top will look. When you find a width you like, just measure it and add the 1/2" for seams.
Thanks Carol, that will work! Off to the sewing room I go.
Here it is with a 1.5" border, what do you think?
Post it on show n tell so I can favorite it.
Marie, that's perfect! It's enough to keep the fabrics separated but doesn't take away from them. Nice!
It looks perfect, Marie. Just enough of a border and sashing.

Marie your sashing looks very nice with your blocks. Any larger would be too much I think. You did a great job. Very pretty colors. Now you are encouraging me to cut the sashing for my DGD quilt. I have all the blocks finished just need to cut the sashing and borders.
Thanks for showing your quilt.
Thanks for all the nice comments girls!
it looks wonderful. Wow!
