This is a class I have enrolled in that is given by Superior Threads company.  In case anyone else is interested, enrollment is due by 6-19-13.  Each month for $16.95 (plus another $29.95 the first month) they send you a kit that includes instructions, thread, and everything you need but the fabric to learn about the different types of thread and how best to use them. Here's a piece from the web site about the projects:

Below are several examples of what you will create during your studies at Superior University:
Clutch Purse using Kimono Silk
Decorative Pillow using Texture Magic
Coaster using Razzle Dazzle
Greeting card using Rainbows
Pincushion using King Tut
Craft Apron using So Fine #30
Water Bottle Cozy using Charlotte’s Fusible Web, Metallic, and So Fine #50
Thread Fabric using numerous threads and Dissolve-4X

Materials included in the Starter Kit with Course 101
-- Lab Book (3-ring binder with page protectors)
-- Our new 96-page color booklet, What Makes Us Superior, which includes numerous Reference Guides
-- Thread Therapy with Dr. Bob DVD ($19.95 value)
-- Superior Topstitch Needles (assortment pack of five needles and includes four different needle sizes)

-- One spool of Bottom Line thread which you will use on monthly projects
-- Lab sheet for recording information when using new threads
-- One time Supply Fee for above items: $29.95 including shipping (USA addresses).
Not included are fabric (we know you have plenty) and basic sewing supplies.

Their site has a whole lot of info about threads and quilting-related topics.

I sat through an hour-long Dr. Bob presentation at a quilt show last year.  He's entertaining and knowledgeable, so you will enjoy the DVD.
