Hi folks:

I'm pretty new to quilting. I just did two pillows for my daughters to practice hand quilting. I'm now trying my hand at a quilted throw. I started hand quilting yesterday and just realized today this thread is lighter than what I used on the pillows. From what I read online, it doesn't seem like this thread is recommended for hand quilting - a heavier thread is recommended. So far so good though. The thread seems to be holding up just fine.

I'd rather not redo what I've done so far. But will I regret not using a heavier thread?

Thanks folks!

June

Aurifil 50/2 is for piecing or machine quilting.  For hand quilting you should use a 40 wt thread and it should be labeled for hand quilting.  There are some 40 wt. threads that work better for machine quilting.  Aurifil Mako has a 28 thread that is also recommended for hand quilting.  It's a little heavier than the 40.  On another quilting board a lady says that it will be her thread of choice.  I have a spool of it to try, just haven't yet.

I use Gutermann hand quilting thread, I like it the best out of all I've tried. I especially like how it really never gets saggy at the end, which makes threading needles very easy. It also very rarely knots up.

I also use Gutermann, and agree with Jen

Thanks everyone for your replies. I picked up Gutermann hand quilting thread this morning. (I ripped out what I'd already done last night. Sigh.)

For my daughter's pillows I'd used Signature for one and Sulky for the other. They are pretty, but I did have trouble with them tangling. So thanks all for your suggestions!

Unfortunately, I've had bad experience with Gutterman.  It tangles and knots on me and it's too coarse.  My hand quilting thread of choice is YLI.  That may change after I try Prescensia 40 wt. and Aurifil Mako. 40 wt and 28 wt.
