Maggie aka Grandma Sunshine Posted: Sun, Mar 31 2013 5:21 AM

Well gals, being grandma has had it's rewards and pitfalls this weekend.  My daughter-in-law has been sick all week. They thought it was her gallbladder but they've ruled it out. So of course they sent her home. They did two ultrasounds and bloodwork and turned up nada.  She's in pain but functioning.  Now shes got the head and chest curd on top of the pain.

We had a wonderful time with our granddaughters today but both are sick with the head & chest crud. We got here around 8:30 pm Friday night. There is some rearranging of rooms going on here so we are sharing a room with the girls. Normally that wouldn't have been a problem but I'm a light sleeper and the youngest (3) coughed all night Friday.  I woke up at 1 am and the oldest (5) was whimpering that she had wet the bed. I got up with her and she had not, she just needed to go potty. I got her settled back into bed and just started to fall asleep when the youngest fell out of bed. So I get up, cuddle and kiss boo-boos, and get her settled back in. Well, she starts coughing again. She and I get up to rub Vicks on her feet and chest and I give her some homeopathic cough stuff.  We lay on the couch and she flips and flops but finally dozes off. Then she falls off the couch and we start all over again. By this time it is 3:30 am. I get her resettled and put couch cushions on the floor just in case she decides to take another tumble.  I lay on another section of couch and relax into "ahhh" when I hear one of my fur babies bark.  She knows I've been up and wants to join me. Then she starts scratching at the door. I hurry up to retrieve her so she doesn't wake up DH and oldest GD. She gives her affections and settles into the couch with me, snuggling under the blanket between my legs. The next thing I know I'm sweating and thinking to myself, " just call it a night and make some coffee."  LOL. Now that was an ahhh moment on top of maybe three hours of broken sleep.

We had a busy day planned. We took the GDs to the local Harley shop. Supposedly just to take a quick look at the motorcycles. Right, DH never makes a quick stop. Finally we move on to the grocery store to pick up a few healthy snacks for the movie we are going to see (Wonderful World of Oz). We get to a theater crowded with parents, grandparents and children. I send DH for two bottles of water (goodie purse too full to hold water too). He comes back fuming and saying water is te same price as gold and we better not waste a drop. I laughed and asked how much per bottle. He said $5!  I asked him why he didn't just get one and some cups. After all these years he decides to follow instructions and says "I was sent for two bottles and I came back with two bottles."  ROTFLMAO  So the movie starts and immediately I'm looking at DH saying "what was this rated?"  He shrugs his shoulders and we each take a girl on our lap so they can cover their eyes and tell us how scary it is. It was way too scary for kids!!!  I forgot just how terrifying the Wizard of Oz was as a kid but it all came rushing back as my GDs cowered into our chests. Sheesh, don't take kids to this movie!

we leave the theater and I want to test drive a Fiat.  We cram the GDs car seats in the back seat of the Fiat and away we go. LOL it was fun. Love all the pep on the 5-speed turbo. ;-) The girls are so exhausted they fall asleep. The seats are straight up and down so the girls are leaning forward and to the side, seat belts holding them from crashing into the back of our seats.  Neck kink on the horizon. Mom and dad meet up with us and decide to take a couple of cars for a test drive too. DH'S is invited to ride with so grandma and the girls wait "patiently" for their fun to end. Well, it wasn't fast enough to suit me and the GDs. LOL We are hungry.  We pick a place to eat but there is a 45 minute wait. IHop was screaming my name from a block away with its nearly vacant parking lot and speedy service. It was a good choice and satisfied all.

Now onto the grocery store to pick up Easter breakfast fixins then home to settle into a movie. I suggested real drugs for GDs so we could all get a good nights rest. I was so tired at 10 pm I went to bed with oldest GD. Youngest GD was laying on couch with her daddy, sound asleep and finally quiet. DS said he'd just let her sleep with them tonight. Who was I to argue?  LOL  At 3:20 am I woke up to coughing by oldest GD so I get up and take her to the couch so DH can sleep.  Youngest GD is one one section of the couch, out like a light. I get the oldest some homeopathic cough syrup and rub her down with Vicks but she continues to cough. DS gets up and gives her some other stuff and goes back to bed. I settle into the couch with both GDs and DS comes back out to get meds for DIL. This is a very active house at night!  At 3:45 am I call it a night and make a pot of coffee and decided to let everyone share in my adventure!  At 4 am DS gets up again and gets meds for DIL. At 4:15 am DIL gets up for more meds and checks on DG. At 4:15 am, fur babies bark and want out with me. So I get the babes and settle back in with my coffe and iPad. Now my eyes are getting heavier (5:15 am) and I think I'll take a nap before everyone gets up for the morning!  I might be able to squeeze in 15 minutes. HAHAHA  Good thing we are heading home later this morning. I need some rest.

Hi Maggie,     Boy, what a time you have had.  Hope everyone gets rid of their cough and crud soon.  I came home from Branson and within 48 hours I was down with a bad cold.  DH tried to stay away from me but he still ended up with it.  He is almost thru his but now I'm starting to cough again.  I'm hoping mine is just a bit of post nasal drip from allergies.  This spring (if you can call it that) is going to be the worst for allergies.  My roses have started to leaf and so have the maple trees in the front yard.  Pollen will be following pretty quickly now that some warmer weather is forecasted.  Thank goodness for Loratadine (Claratin).   You'll just have to get busy and start some more sewing when you get back home to feel better.

Oh my gosh, Maggie!   What an exciting weekend you have had.   Going home to crash into a heap now?  My day is just beginning.  We are having Easter Dinner at my daughters house.  I am to help her.  At first, it was just me, then she invited her daughters and their families and went on to invite a young woman and her daughter from church-- added a very good friend and her husband to the mix, then invited 2 young female ministers from her church-  oh- and along with her 2 brothers. How many more there will be before she gets home from church is up in the air.   To top all of this off, her ovens don't work, she has no microwave- only a toaster oven, but she took my roaster home to do the ham in.  I will have to go over ad get the salmon she got and bring it back here to bake with lemon juice, butter, onion and dill and figure out how to keep it warm until serving.  Well, come to think of it she has a warming tray.   Guess we are all set.    Ginny

As the ER doc told me not to go outside, until the pollen is finished (like that is even possible!), my sister suggested that I get a hold of some local Royal honey from the queen bee. She said that will get rid of a pollen allergy. Also, great for if your cat gets beat up and has open sore and scratchs. Who knew. So, on the search for a bee keeper. I would think, as there is only one Queen, that her honey doesn't come cheap. But, if this works it is worth it.

Maggie, does Vicks on the feet help an asmatic cough? Think I will try it anyway.

Happy Easter to all.

My goodness alot of busy going on today.  I hope everyone has great time.

Maggie I feel for your daughter .  Any pain is no fun.  My relatives say I'm next in line to have gallbladder removed but so far docs have ruled it out. I had ballon ablation once that went bad and thought it was gall stone but it wasn't.  Thoughts and prayers going out for your daughter.

We got home around 3:00 pm. DH left for work and I fell asleep in the chair with fur babies. I woke up thinking it was dark and time for bed (in basement sewing family room). Sheesh, it was 4:30 and the sun was shining!  I'm so tired I can't think so I vegged in front of the tv (I did start a load of laundry). Now I'm truly ready for bed. DIL said they took the girls to Prompt care this afternoon and doctor said it was a virus so no meds. Both girls have had several bouts of bronchitis and pneumonia this winter and have never fully recovered. I think the doctor made an error in judgement. Isn't that a nice way of saying he's full of whoey!  LOL I suggested they take the girls to a specialist because there is definitely something more going on.

I'm staring at all my projects thinking "tomorrow."  I'm sure I'll have more energy after a good night rest.  You gals are so funny and seem like you all had a very busy weekend, just in a different way. I hope you all had a wonderful family Easter. Those of you who are fighting the crud (or have family fighting it) I pray for your speedy recovery. Thank you for the empathy and prayers.

This tired Grandma is going to drag her behind up three flights of stairs and go to bed. I will catch up on all the happenings tomorrow over coffee. Good night all you wonderful quilters!  Pleasant dreams.

I don't know about asthma but its worth a try. It appeared to help and they felt so rotten they even left their socks on.  The relief was short lived because they are so bad right now. It worked better Friday night than Saturday night. By Saturday night my DS was so desperate he put it super thick on the bottoms. LOL I guarantee more isn't better. ROTFLMAO. But I do think it felt soothing to te girls and eloped relax them.

Maggie-sounds like a rough weekend!!!   we took Cupcake to see The Croods on Tuesday (cute movie!!!) and at 2 AM she started vomiting and didn't stop until 7 AM.  Then the fever and diarrhea started :(  She begged to stay with us but I told her if her fever got higher we were meeting her mom and dad at the ER. It never went over 101.9 and she slept for several hours. At 6:35 AM I get woke up to her starving...she had lots  yogurt and toast and never acted sick again.  She went home last night and then begged to come home with us today after Easter dinner at my MIL.  I had to tell her no; I've had her for over a week and grandma is TIRED!!!  It took me most of the evening to get caught up on housework and taking care of animals.  She was crying when we left and she said be ready, I'll see you Thursday...LOL  I hope you get rested up and I hope the kids get to feeling better soon.
