I rarely use patterns other than those created by me. One of my friends had suggested I share them.  My question is: Should I find others willing to test the patterns before I share them?

They, of course, worked fine for me, but I knew what I wanted. Someone using the pattern may not see the "vision" of the final piece. Or perhaps I didn't explain something well enough...etc.

Thanks

Kinsey

Hi Kinsey,

I would share them and perhaps offer to explain any parts that may need further explanations.  I know what you mean, just because I understand my own thought processes doesn't mean everyone else can follow along :)

Good luck

Exactly. What makes sense to me could totally be out there for someone else. I guess I'll try that after the holidays and just make it a point to try to check my email more regularly,s o if there's questions, I can answer and then adjust the pattern accordingly when needed :D

Kinsey, I agree with Annie that you should share them for a trial run. Good luck and I hope you will post pictures.

I think it's always a good idea to find pattern testers to make sure your instructions are easy to understand. I've seen too many patterns that were frustrating because of poorly written instructions.

Whatever you decide, I would love to try your pattern. I usually can figure instructions out, but I love trying new things. Let me know if I can be a tester for your patterns. I don't know how it would work being a tester, but please let me know.

Terry Atkinson of Atkinson Designs works with a local quilt shop to test her patterns.  They invite a small group of interested quilters to come to the shop one day, and she gives them the pattern which they then begin cutting/assembling under her watchful eye.  She records every question that comes up and makes note of any trouble spots.  She then makes final revisions to her pattern before publishing it.  Of course, many of her patterns are for purses, pillows, table toppers, and simple quilts that can be nearly completed in a day.  Not sure how this would work for a large complicated quilt design.

Kinsey, Are you in a Guild? Or, do you have an LQS? You could distribute the pattern that wa,y and then, answer any questions. Or, maybe, the LQS would let you do a class.

Kinsey, testing out one of your patterns sounds like fun.

i think that if you could get a group of quilters together, from beginners to experienced, and see how they interpret your pattern would be ideal.   However, that is not always possible. The other thing would be to plan a test day, send your pattern online to interested people, and then as comments or questions come up you could answer them. Some could show you through Skype even.  Just a thought.

I am interested in you idea of getting quilters together? I have been quilting for only 3 years, but really love it and would love to be involved in a sewing group. But the quilt guilds I have visited are only meetings that get together, but no sewing? Has anyone else starteda group meeting other quilters in their area that want to get together in homes and just enjoy the company while sewing? We do this for baking, we all get together every so often to bake all our holiday baking, but I don't know that many quilters? Any suggestions?

Hi Michelle,

My guild has a sewing day once a month - so guild meets for meeting and speakers on second Tues (2 hours) and sewing day is every fourth Tues (6 hours). We rent a township hall just minutes from town at a very reasonable cost for the sewing day. You may need to check with your local guilds to see if they do anything like that.  I also get together with girlfriends for sewing in our homes once in a while, and sometimes we rent a retreat center for a long weekend of sewing.

Donna B in Washington hosts girlfriend sew days in her beautiful home several times a year.  Maybe she'll see this discussion and repost some of her great pictures.
