I'm new to this just starting and collecting patterns, and trying to get tips and how to get started with my first quilt.

Also starting with blocks it seems easier to begin.

Elaine most of your pattern when you cut the fabric have the 1/4 in included already ,you just stich at 1/4 inch as you make the block. .Barbara

Hi Elaine, it is nice to meet you. My only suggestion on getting started is that you pick a simple pattern for your first quilt.

Life is like a quilt...bits & pieces, joy & sorrow, stitched with love

Elaine - welcome to QCA.  I say dig in and go for it...teehee... my very first quilt was an 8 pointed star made by hand- talk about hard...teehee... my next was a huge king size quilt that had over 5000 pieces... yep - you can say I am crazy!  I am a quiltoholic.  But on a lighter side - if and when you decide on the quilt you want to make - my one and only real suggestion is that you read through the whole pattern and if you have any questions - ask them right then and there.  I read all patterns 3 times so that I know exactly what I am getting myself into - I also make a practice block now - if the author of the pattern says this block is supposed to measure 9.5" - I make the one block and test and see if it is 9.5" - if it isn't then I check my seams... sometimes authors don't tell you - that you either need to use a scant 1/4" or a regular 1/4" and that one or two threads can make a big difference in your making the right size.  so in the case of the 9.5" block - if I am right on - great - if I am smaller then I have to reduce my seam size - if I am bigger then I have to increase my seam size.

Take it slow - don't rush - quilting if nothing else will teach you patience...

After all that - welcome welcome welcome - and start asking away!

Welcome Elaine, I hope you enjoy yourself, No quilt is ever perfect, you will have great blocks and so not-so-good blocks, if you have nasty blocks just pull out the seam ripper and rip it rip it and re-sew.
