Hi everyone, has anyone wondered about or more importantly, figured out how to create a specific sized (say queen) quilt using the race method? I mean other chan more racing and cutting adding to sides, using borders, sashings, what have you? It is driving me and my sister crazy (doesn't take much). Regardless, thx a bunch.
hi faye, welcome to the group. i assume you just use more jelly rolls until it's big enough

I have done other sizes and have come up with very odd shaped quilts. I haven't sat down to figure the math of it all. I have added borders to them to make them bigger.
OK...had to stop and do some calculating. If you know what size you want, you can back into how long of a 2 1/2" strip you need to start with.
<width> * <length divided by 2 because the rows are 2" finished> = amount needed
Example: 90 x 90 square
90 * (90 / 2) = 4050"
If you know how much you have, you can figure out the finished size by taking the full length and dividing by two and doubling the rows as you go. (I know, that was confusing.)
So, for two jelly rolls, it would be 3200 inches:
3200 - 1 row
1600 - 2 rows
800 - 4 rows
400 - 8 rows
200 - 16 rows
100 - 32 rows
Finished size is 100 x (32 * 2) = 100 x 64. In this example, the rows would be going vertically instead of horizontally.
Help or confuse???
90 x 45 = 4050.
The Quilt Daddy: Jeanine: Example: 90 x 90 square 90 * (90 / 2) = 4050" Jeanine, Math off a little here. I believe the correct answer should have been 4500. Other than that you gave a great explanation of the Jelly Roll race Quilt. Cudos for the work you did on it.

90/2 = 45

The Quilt Daddy: My mistake but where did the 45 come from?
My mistake but where did the 45 come from?
width = 90
length = 90 divided by 2 because the finished width of a jelly roll strip is 2". 45 rows that are 2" wide comes out to 90".
I was interested in this thread as I have been gathering batik jelly rolls for a king duvet for my son. Thanks Fayelmo & Jeanine for getting my head running along these lines for how I might do this. Now, check my math - using 100 Jelly Roll strips:
4,400 1 Row (Rough length, considering joining seams)
2,200 2 Rows
1,100 4 Rows
550 8 Rows
275 16 Rows – (Do Not Cut in Half!!!)
Cut these 16 rows into 3 equal lengths – approximately 91 + inches
Sew all 3 sections together on the long sides – you now have a rectangle 91” X 96”. I think this would be pretty close for the center of a king size quilt or duvet.

That makes sense to me...

Man, Donna, I want to see the pile of fabrics when you finish the 4400" - I just laugh when I see the 1600" piled up so yours is gonna be really neat to see. Don't forget to cut off the first 18" of the first strip so they will end up staggered. I made one for SIS for her 80th and need to get it up to her. I was late with it! Imagine that! Also need to take a picture of it.
Have fun, this sounds like it will be awedsome. Hope you are doing well.
I promise I won't bring this to the Leavenworth Retreat! It would probably take up the whole room...LOL!
You should post a picture of the pile!
