My email account was hacked. I realised this when Marie sent me a message saying she couldn't open the pictures I sent. I changed my password immediately and today the folks at MSN sent me notification confirming my suspicions.

If we correspond offline and you get email with the subject "hey" then says "click here for photos" DO NOT OPEN IT. I would never just say "hey" and not use your actual name in an email.

It really irks me to have to write this. I don't even know who this email went to before I caught it.

It happened to a couple of my friends too as I received similar emails from them. I reported it to the powers that be.

A curse on all you stupid hackers out there.

Sorry Kris, that is such a pain. I hope you did not get a virus.

My son and his wife were both hacked.  All of their contacts were getting really strange emails but knew they couldn't be from him because of the content.   They both finally switched to new email addresses.  Sad, he has had his for 18 years.

I hate viruses.  They take over everything.   And it seems you can never get everything back to what you had.

Thanks for the warning Kris.

Spudgrandma:

Sorry Kris, that is such a pain. I hope you did not get a virus.

No Spud, no virus. I did not open any emails someone just gained access and took over and used it to send spam. I won't change my email address as I've had it since 1997.

I did have to reset my password and get all sorts of confirmation codes etc until I could change my password which was done twice in as many days. It's a pain but I get responses from people I haven't heard from in a long time.

Patti,

the people at MSN were really good with the reset. They removed links and a bunch of other technical crap LOL and they certainly made sure that I got my account back.

My DIL had her Fcaebook hacked. I started getting emails from her but her name was spellled wrong and the emails were going to my junk mail. I contacted her by phone and she said she was hacked. Thaank goodness I never opened any of those emails.

Kris, I'm sorry you had to go through this - I know others who have, too, and it can be a real pain for some to fix. I'm glad Marie was smart enough to contact you quickly!

Kris is right to say don't open email with "hey" as the subject line.  Our work email has a spam filter & we get a "quarrantine" digest daily which is a list of all the suspected spam emails - most are junk.  Other common spam subject lines include: are you online?;  here's my latest photo; how are you?; can we chat?.  They seem basic enough but if that's not the way your friends "talk" in email, don't open attachments until you confirm your friend actually sent it.

Kris--

Hope all is well now.  I was hacked a few months ago and had to go through the same stuff.  Makes you wonder what these people get out of doing such a stupid thing.

At least you dodged that bullet.  I know it is a big pain but I'm happy you are getting it all sorted out.   (((HUGS)))

What a pain Kris. Glad you didn't have damage. My son's email was hacked and it went to his phone and erased all his contacts. Who knows anyone's phone numbers these days. LOL It took him awhile to rebuild his contact list.  I wonder why anyone would think doing something like that is fun.
