How do I figure how much fabric I need for the back of a quilt that is 112" X 88"?

Hi Renaye,

I usually try to find the extra wide backing fabric and then use my shortest measurement plus 8 inches for the length.  I believe that some of the quilt shops carry up to  110" wide, so in your case I would use the 112" as my length. That would make it 3 1/2 yards of the x-wide fabric.  You will have fabric left over for another project and save money at the same time!

Good Luck,

Figuring out how much backing fabric has always been an issue for me. The quilter, who does the longarm quilting for me, only once so far, requiers 4 inces all around for the batting and backing. I am about ready to send off another one. Now, I knw where to come to figure this out.

Good answer.  I didn't think about the wide fabric for this one.  Thank you so much.

If you use regular width fabric...this is how I figure it:

quilt - 112" wide by 88" long (to clarify)

112+8 = 120" (accounting for 4" extra on each side")

88 + 8 = 96"

96/36 = 2.67  (changing inches to yards) (I would round up to 2 3/4 yards)

2.75 * 3 = 8.25 yards needed for backing

since most fabric has 42" of useable fabric you would need to sew 3 widths of fabric together to get your backing wide enough
