I think I'm right here. You'd need 2" squares. When sewen together they will be 3-1/2"

Oh, sorry. I didn't really answer the question you asked. Cut 2" strips. Sew them together and cut across into 2" pieces. Sewn together, you'll have a 3-1/2", 4 patch square.

The strips should be cut at 1 3/4 wide, one of one color and one of the other color. Then sew them together (they will measure 3 1/2 across when sewn) Next cut from your strips pieces 1 3/4 wide When you sew two of them together for your 4 patch it will measure 31/2 by 3 1/2
Hope this helps

Granny, I think you're not taking into consideration the 1/2" that is taken up when sewn together. I think Judy is right.

if i'm reading it right, she wants a 3 1/2 inch finished square. two inch squares will make a 3 inch finished square. so i think they need to be cut 2 1/4 inches. gini

I think what she wants is a 3-1/2" finished block but before it's joined to the other 3-1/2" block. That would require four 2" squares joined together to form a finished 4 patch that is 3-1/2" square.
Once she has the required number of 3-1/2" 4-patch blocks she can join them together. At that point, once they are in the finished quilt, the blocks would end up being 3" square.

My engineer grandson just agreed with Gini if what Nell needs is a 3 1/2" finished square. Strips need to be cut 2 1/4". 2 1/4" x 2 = 4 1/2" - 1" for seams = 3 1/2" finished block.
