Immediately I think of a rainbow of words or with words.  I will have to play with that idea some when I can't sleep.  Colors could still be predominantly purple and blue.

Jeanine - does your machine do embroidery?  Can you embroider the words in the middle of plain pieces and then have that be the center of the block, like an autograph block?  Then you could add other sayings, inspirational, etc,, as well.  Maybe some sayings about "family", or something along that line....(since she has a child now, that be important to her)

For an example, this is one of my FAVORITE sayings, and it might be apropos for her:

NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST.

It was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, and is found in the BOOKS of "the Lord of the Rings".  I have always held that saying close to my heart since I was in college when I didn't quite know what I was going to do.

Bella:
does your machine do embroidery?

No, it doesn't.  I did think that would be neat.  I have a friend that would probably do that for me but I would like to have a better idea of what I'm doing so I know what to tell her I need.  I think she would want the finished block and then to the embroidery on them.  I thought of autograph block but can't visualize how to design it with the blues/purples.  My friend that requested this is NOT a quilter and isn't much help in understanding how to design it.

How about hand embroider the sayings, on big enough white (or light) pieces so that it could be cut down later to fit, AND have HER mom, your friend, do them while you are waiting on, or cutting out, the other pieces?  Maybe even have HER put in a block or two that SHE does herself? With the effort of all of you put together, it might be kind of special!

Barbara, your mystery quilt turned out really nice!  Did you guess the layout before the last step was revealed?  Those blue stars are an unusual design.

Bella, I think your idea for Jeanine's quilt is a good one!  Since this is a young woman, it might be nice to find a contemporary design to set the word blocks into.

Very pretty Barbara.  You could really show off your quilting in the plain blocks!

Jeanine

Have you seen the pattern for the autograph block that is a star.  If is a beautiful block.   You could do the star points out of purple and blue and find a light background to use for the rest of the block and the center could be embroidered with the words.

OOOOH!  And a STAR would be so appropriate - as in a guiding compass, steering by the stars, God is the Compass - all those types of symbolism come to mind!  I don't mean to make the COMPASS type of stars, I am just referring to the fact that so many voyagers have used the stars to guide their voyage (ah, you know what i mean) But the SYMBOLISM is right on!  Yep, a star quilt it should be (I think).  Good idea, Nana!
