how do you match colors and prints when buying fabric,

For your first project, you may want to choose a pattern that only calls for three or four fabrics, and then you can choose some from a coordinating "family" of fabrics. That's the best way to get perfect color matches until you gain more experience and start to build your stash. Or you can choose one focus fabric that really catches your eye, and then locate other near-solids that coordinate well as you hold them next to each other. There are color dots on the selvage that help you identify coordinating colors. Don't forget that you have a really good resource in the quilt shop employees - they LOVE to help customers select fabrics!

What kind of batting do i use for quilting, and also what kind of material

Most of us use cotton batting. You can get some good prices using coupons from Joann's if you have a store near you. Probably you don't have to worry about the batting yet until you are nearly done with your first project. I chose a table runner as my first project so that I wouldn't be out too much fabric if it didn't work out well. A good quality quilting cotton would be the best material for your first project (and most projects).

- welcome to QCA. I say dig in and go for it...teehee... my very first quilt was an 8 pointed star made by hand- talk about hard...teehee... my next was a huge king size quilt that had over 5000 pieces... yep - you can say I am crazy! I am a quiltoholic. But on a lighter side - if and when you decide on the quilt you want to make - my one and only real suggestion is that you read through the whole pattern and if you have any questions - ask them right then and there. I read all patterns 3 times so that I know exactly what I am getting myself into - I also make a practice block now - if the author of the pattern says this block is supposed to measure 9.5" - I make the one block and test and see if it is 9.5" - if it isn't then I check my seams... sometimes authors don't tell you - that you either need to use a scant 1/4" or a regular 1/4" and that one or two threads can make a big difference in your making the right size. so in the case of the 9.5" block - if I am right on - great - if I am smaller then I have to reduce my seam size - if I am bigger then I have to increase my seam size.

Take it slow - don't rush - quilting if nothing else will teach you patience...

After all that - welcome welcome welcome - and start asking away!

Re: beginner

hi elaine, welcome to the group

Re: beginner

thank you I'm looking for one,and happy to meet you.
