My husband is starting a new job and will be traveling often. He asked me to make a quilt for him using fabrics that reminded me of him/us. I started collecting these fabrics but quickly realized there are many different colorways and types. How do I make unmatched fabrics and themes go together? Any pattern ideas?

Make a crazy quilt - representing....
....uh,.... representing your wild and crazy love affair? Your crazy new schedule? How he makes you crazy with requests like this? :)
Or you can find a neutral and use it for the border/sashing on the blocks and unifies them.
Quilters are people who strip so they won't go topless.
Wha tabout something like an I Spy pattern with snowball blocks?

What a fun challenge your DH has given you. I don't have a suggestion, but either of the two you've already received would make quite an interesting design. It's so sweet that hubby wants this quilt.

Joy,
how about a memory quilt with some of your favourite photos?
Don't worry about "matching" fabrics and themes. Just choose fabrics that are pleasing to you both. Most of all just have fun with it, he'll love whatever you make.

Go to www.quiltville.com and check out some of her scrappy style patterns. I bet you can find something that will make all your different fabrics really pop.

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas! Nana I love the website you suggested! Kim I am really liking the I spy pattern. I think it just may work for what I have! Ok so I'm a little excited!

I thought about adding photos Kris. What photo fabric do you recommend?
Put black sashing around blocks and think of each block as a page in a scrapbook. They don't have to match. You don't even need to have each block the same size if you want to get a little more complex. Sounds like a fun project and even better that the idea came from your husband.

Why not have a collage of all different blocks...sort of square in a square with the center square having the meaning? You could start out with little boy square with trucks and a little girl square with dolls and show the different stages you've gone through. A wedding couple. Graduation. Children, pets, some real photos on fabric. Where you are now in life. What each other's interests are. Books, quilting, cooking, whatever. Sort of like your life journal together. Then have your sashing to look like a picture frame around each. "The Times of Your Life"

I used Kona cotton treated with Bubble jet set. Ironed freezer paper to the back and printed on the fabric. It worked out cheaper than buying fabric sheets as I used a lot of photos in my quilt.
For scraps, I like the framed four patch. Also, a disappearing 9 patch may work
