Hi,

Ive just been re reading one of my Elm creek books (yet again) where Maggie finds a wonderful old quilt in a garage sale, and i just wondered has this ever happened to anyone on here, or maybe someones given you a quilt.

Needless to say its never happened to me (although im always hoping).

lots of love

Frances

I have seen some old quilts in estate sales but none that I wanted to bring home with me.

Frances,  I have an old quilt that has been passed down in the family.  My great great aunt made it in the 1930's.  It was appraised for $300.  It hangs in my bedroom where the sun never sees it so it won't fade.  I always watch for old quilts and if they're in decent shape, I would get them.   Usually they are in really tough shape and not worth the money they are also asking.

I have purchased two quilt tops on eBay that I plan on quilting some day.

Just last weekend I saw a beautiful trip around the world quilt at an estate sale.  I was very tempted to buy it, but there were 3 ink stains on it and I thought to myself that I should make my own heirlooms instead of buying someone else's.

I have numerous quilts given to me from my Granny, including 2 tops I have finished; and 2 still unfinished tops (one she pieced another a friend of hers pieced).  I treasure the Granny quilts more than my own because she means so much to me.  She has always been my inspiration and I hope to have her skills some day.  I am now ok, where she would be a master hand quilter.   And she did it without all the fancy cutting tools we have today, etc.

I hope that someday when I am gone my quilts (and Granny's too) will be taken by family; I hope strangers aren't rummaging through my quilts thinking they should make their own heirlooms...

This crazy quilt was made by my great grandmother and great aunt.  It is made of velvet fabrics and is very heavy.  The story I've been told is that my great grandfather worked in textile sales.

Sheri, that's a beautiful crazy quilt, but I bet it is heavy.  Make sure you cherish it and pass it on to the next generation.

A few years ago both DD and I found antique quilts at a garage sale. Her's is a Churn Dash made from shirting prints. Mine is a star variation with double pink borders. And MIL has gifted me a couple of antique quilts made by her mother/grandmother that I treasure. I think they are both in my gallery... Maybe.

Quilters are people who strip so they won't go topless.

This Summer I gound in g sale cheap can't remember what I paid for it.  Now I don't know if I'll ever get to the finishing of it.  Might just end up donating it because it was all hand done. shredded and full of rust, but maybe someone would love the challenge of working with it.
