hand-stitching sashing to quilted rows

I'm making a string quilt--quilt as you go including backing and batting at same time-- and now joining rows.  I'm hand-stitching the sashing between rows and cannot hold the blocks with my hand to reach the sashing strip.  Any suggestions as to how to do this without an elastic hand? ;-)  Hope this question is clear.....

Sorry Plhare, but I just can't see how you are holding it. Could you sketch it or send a picture?
