Brigit-Carol Posted: Mon, Sep 23 2013 5:32 PM

I've decided to make the Snowball 4 patch quilt on MSQC video.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGsF1notX2A&list=PL16A258FF115248B6&index=53  Since I don't have a layer cake, I'm cutting my own.  What do you think of this combination? My criteria was that each fabric have at least one, preferable two colours from another fabric. The center of the snowball will be an off-white tone on tone with flowers throughout.  These will make 9.5" four patches, so the individual squares are medium sized.   Are there any that don't play well together with it's neighbours?   Do you think I have enough variety or should I add a couple more?  BYW, you can click on the photo to get a larger one to see the patterns better. Thanks!

Brigit-Carol, your fabrics look good. The only one that I wasn't sure about was the green as it seems much brighter and also a different kind of pattern than the rest.

I would take out the green and the larger flower print, they are too different.

Brigit-Carol...

I will agree the green kinda of over powers the other fabrics. The only other one I might question would be the large flower print but according to the gang here its fine. I never can decide either LOL

Thanks for your advice.  I wondered about the larger flower print, but it contains all the colours of the others, plus when I looked closely at the quilt behind Jenny, there were a couple of large prints mixed in.  I'll take out the green on the first row -- that was a last minute substitution as I wanted more green.  What do you think about this array with a more subdued green and another brown?

Brigit-Carol, I think your fabrics are fine. I would even leave that brighter green in, it's not so bright to over power the others, it will give some sparkle to the quilt. The more fabrics you have, the less important it is that they match so perfectly. It will make your quilt more interesting.

Brigit-Carol,

I like your new selection, even with the larger flower print. I think the other green you first had just did not seem to fit.

What I learned early on in quilting that if the patterns and colors are chosen because they match well in color, scale, tone, etc when you look at it from 6 to 8 feet away they all meld together and you have a very boring quilt. I have got so that I like to throw in what I call the "disobedient child" to give it an edge and I am much happier. This may not work for everyone. Therefore I like the first shot much better than the new improved version.

These all blend together much better.  I don't think you will have a problem with the larger print.   I think this quilt will be very pretty.

You've got your lights, darks, mediums.  The larger floral gives it some pizazz.   Perfect.

What do YOU like best? Trust yourself and do it.

Quilters are people who strip so they won't go topless.
