I am new to quilting and I am tired of fighting with my Walmart iron. I used a Rowenta over the weekend and really like the weight of it. I'm willing to spend the money to get a good iron but I want it to last. What do you think is the best iron?
Good luck. I have bought the expensive irons and they don't seem to last any longer than the cheaper ones at Walmart. I am presently using a nice GE iron that I bought at Walmart. Figure I will get just as much use out of it and won't have spent near as much money. I had a Rowenta and loved it but it only lasted about 6 months.

I have found that a Singer iron is the best I've ever used. You can purchase it at Amazon and Joann's. It heats up very quickly and has great steam. After more than 6 months of heavy use, it still doesn't leak. It's only about $55.
Oh, that's not long at all. Thank you.
Thanks Cindy, I'll check the Singer out.
amy, you will get as many responses here as there are irons. i buy mine at the thrift stores if they are available when i need one. my last one was a rowenta i got for $5 at a yard sale, but i would not spend the money to get a new one. the thrift store irons last about as long as the new ones i get, and they are $5 or less. i think irons don't last as long around quilters, because we use them constantly instead of once in a while. the last two black and deckers i got were pretty good. good luck with your next iron.

I think if we expect an iron to last we need to go back to the old cast iron ones that you heat on top of the stove...LOL
My iron is from Contental Electric; $15. from Amazon.com. I really like it. It's very light which is good for me.
The Vermont Country Store has a good heavy iron with no holes on the bottom for around $30. It's a good one if you don't use steam.

Leslie, Jim said they stopped making irons with a cloth covered cords for a reason. Can you say house fire?? I know you have never had that probelm. Never say NEVER!!
Sukochi, i make sure they are in very good condition, and i don't leave them on.
thanks!
I was just about to put a post out here about this same subject. Thank you! This will make my search much easier.
I just tossed a Black & Decker I picked up at Walmart for $12.50 - after almost 2 years of use. It finally committed the fatal crime of vomiting water all over a quilt when I had the steam off. It was leaking from holes I didn't know were there! We had a nice long run, though. I've paid a lot more for irons that didn't last nearly as long. Right now I'm using a Shark that was stashed in the closet & I don't like it very much. The balance is all wrong. It was twice as much as the B&D, so still inexpensive, but next time I'm in Walmart I'm getting another B&D.
I have a T-fal, I got at Target years ago. It's still going strong, and the thing I like is doesn't have an automatic shut off, so I can leave it on for hours, but that might not be a good thing if you are forgetful.
