Frances

I have 3 treadle machines.   I have played with one of mine a bit and hope to one day make a small wall hanging with it just to be able to say I did it.

The machine that I have in treadle base is electric and the motor went on it last year, but that machine was very fast.  I forget the make it looks like a singer but its not.  Don't know if I should try to repair.

Frances,   I have a Singer Treadle machine that was my DH's grandmother's.  I got it from his mother.  I haven't used it (it needs a good cleaning), but I know my MIL made my SIL's wedding dress with it and she was married in 1970.  I learned on a treadle machine that my mother had and always loved it.  I don't know whatever happened to that one.  I always tell people it's like driving a manual transmission car.  Put the left toes on treadle  edge nearest you and other foot on the treadle.  The feet go in opposite directions.  Left toes down when right foot up...and then reverse.  You get a real rhythm going and it's fun.

Diana,

You make it sound fantastic, i did have to think for a minute when you said Manual transmission and then it clicked oh a normal car, over here in the UK the majority of what we drive are manuals. I think its incredible that these machines still last today and even work well.

lots of love

Small wall hanging is that Nana code for a quilt for a single bed, rather than the tent you normally produce :-)

Frances:
Has anyone used a treadle machine and what are they like.

Frances,

my grandmother left me her treadle machine (the one I learned to sew on). I plan on shipping it back here when I go home this summer...Well if they can assure me they won't break it.

Well my new baby arrived today and she's a beauty. They took really goo care of her. This weekend I will work on getting her cleaned up and ready for use. There is a table for her to sit in but that hasn't gotten here yet.

Kris,

With all these machines you are going to have to get a new house, I think this summer i might have to go to a few car boot sales and see what i can find.

lots of love

Kris, your new baby is beautiful!  Can't wait for mine to arrive.  What year was it made in.  I'd love one made in 1937, the year of my birth.

Nana, could you be on the lookout for one for me?
