I used this machine to quilt my quilts for about 8 years. It only does straight stitch but that all we use when we quilt. It's big and heavy, but if you don't have to move it that doesn't matter. I sold mine a year ago when I got my HQ16, but I wish I had kept it. It was sturdy, durable, big throat space, and it could sew through anything.

I have the Babylock version (QCP) of this machine on my frame. Like Jacy said, it's heavy but I like it. I like that I can change the pressure of the presser foot and it sews really well. I've used it for free motion off the frame and it wasn't difficult.
I haven't had any major problems with it. Sometimes I get a bird's nest on the bottom of my work and can't figure out the problem but if I turn it off and come back after a while it works itself out. It's a good little workhorse that I will probably keep if I ever get to upgrade. I believe this one was discontinued (Babylock that is).
I absolutely love my brother pq1500s without it I wouldn't be able to make king size quilts. I was even thinking about getting spare. The only think i wish it had a zig zag feature which it doesn't. just love everything about it.

I really love mine. I use it primarily for FMQ, but it also makes a lovely straight stitch for piecing. It is not choosy about thread and I've never had it birdnest or jam (so far). And I really love the auto thread cutter when piecing. My only "ought" with it is the walking foot that fits the machine does not have a guide, and I was used to using one. I really don't like having to mark the quilting lines. I think there might be third-part walking feet with guides that will fit, but I haven't checked it out yet.
Your friend will not regret purchasing this machine. I found mine used for $250.00. So she might want to check around.

Jacy.. I still have one and your right its a good straight stitch machine.. it just sits in its box since I got long arm..
can you put in a zipper with it?
It had a bunch of feet so I'm pretty sure it had a zipper foot.
i spent the afternoon helping my friend rebind an old favorite quilt of hers. she read all your reviews on this machine, and i relayed some reviews on other sites. she is very excited, and is going home to order her new machine. she has six grandkids she is intending to make quilts for christmas.
I have a PQ1300 and LOVE it! I also have the Flynn quilting frame and it was a combination of the two that got me hooked. One of these days I hope to get a long arm but will hold onto my PQ1300. It will sew through anything!! Your friend can't go wrong if she is looking at the 1500.
Yes it has all the attachments. I use to have a job assembling clothing and i compare the commercial machine with the oil pan underneath (messy) to this one cleaner.

I also had the BrotherPQ1500 S and loved it - I had it on one of the original HQ16 frames that had to be taped to a table - hated the frame but loved the machine. Being as I ended up with a LA, and wanted a new Janome, I traded the Brother in along with my Janome MC 9000. Glad I got rid of the Janome 9000 but wish now I had kept the Brother. It is a real work horse and I never had a bit of trouble with it. I am sure your friend will love it.
