Which side of the batting should face the quilt top

I don't know if there is a rule but all the batting i've worked with is ok either side.

So if you are not using fusible, it doesn't matter which side faces the quilt since they are the same on both sides.  Unless you found something we know nothing about in which case you need to tell us all about it.

I've been told that if one side has a scrim on it, that side should go up.  That way you are less likely to have wisps of batting trying to poke up thru the top when it is quilted.

All these years, I never realized that batting has a right/wrong side. I must go and have an interview with my batting. LOL

If it is not fusible, it doesn't really matter.  With fusible, if it is a small project, I fuse it to the backing to make it faster to quilt.   If it is a larger quilt, I usuallyl fuse it to the front of the quilt.
