I'm starting to piece but I'm having trouble with the thread. I'm using Gutermann extra strong. I've been told it is to thick for what I'm doing. someone please help.
it is probably too big for what you are doing. i use a 40 or preferably a 50 wt. thread
gini in north idaho
where do you find that on the spool?
On most thread spools, that info is on the label or on the edge of the end of the spool. Most quilting thread is around 28 wt. Something thinner (and less wiry) will work better for piecing. The thinner the thread the higher the number. I prefer 50 wt.
aurifil, gutermann, connecting threads, they all have 100% cotton threads in different weights, most major brands do. red rock is a good online source for threads.
The link below is info from the Gutermann site about their threads. I don't know a whole lot about weights, but the info says the extra strong is good for jeans and leather.

and, grandmaof3, welcome to the group and hello
I have never had much luck with Gutterman threads. I personally like Aurifil 50wt but there are other thread brands available in those wts.

Thanks for the welcome, Gini :) I think you and I were both talking about the same thing - that she needed a thinner thread for piecing :)
