I am new to quilting. I have been spinning for awhile. I have some llama fleece that will not make a soft yarn. I was thinking about using it for batting. Has anybody done/used llama batting? Do you think it would be a good batting?

Bobbie, There are Llama farms here that weave thier fleece into yarn for knitting. Are not all Llama fleeces the same?
No not at all. Some are soft as silk others are ruff as burlap.
bobbie joe. the batts you buy today have a scrim on them to keep them from bunching up in little balls after quilting. loose wool wouldn't work very well, however, i have used wool sweaters as batts in small projects and it works very well. i think if you wove the cloth first it work work wonderfully.

sheeps' wool shrinks a lot. if you are planning to use llama wool you need to take the shrinkage into account
The fiber is felted to make into a batting. If you do not go from a hot wash to a cold rinse you will not have to worry about shrinkage or felting.
I think I might try a little project first. I was going to spin this fiber for making a rug . I have full fleeces of alpaca also. Which gives me a lot of fiber that is not good for spinning for items that are close to skin.
felted, they will make a wonderful batt and you won't need to worry about shinking.
It doesn't look like anybody has done this so if you would like to see how it goes I will post pictures.
