I always machine wash my fabric before I use it in a quilt. But I'm new to using pre-cuts. How does one deal with washing jelly rolls, layer cakes or charm packs before use? I'm afraid to wash them for fear of them fraying to bits. Or do you just hope for the best that the fabric won't run, and don't wash them?Thanks!

Terri, welcome and enjoy. I would not wash precuts. The fabrics today are made a lot better than years ago and IMHO they do not need pre-washing.

Terri, I also use color catchers from the laundry aisle of your super market, they work great.

BTW, I agree with Marie - I do not prewash (anything anymore) and I use the color catchers, bearing in mind the color catchers do sometimes fail.
I don't prewash anything anymore either, not even the flannel for baby quilts. I do use the color catchers and have not had them fail yet, even with red, black or blue fabrics. They are great.

I'm not a prewasher but if you really want to you can put your pre cuts in a salad spinner with a mild detergent then let them air dry on a towel.

I pre-wash everything except pre-cuts. When I use pre-cuts I wait to wash them until after the quilt is completed and getting it's first washing. I throw in about 4 dye-catcher sheets and wash it on warm. This has worked so far without bleeding problems.

I wanted to clarify my remark about the color catchers failing...I have never had them fail on a quilt, but they did fail on some White background TShirts, they are now pink :)
