Hmmm. This really is a scrappier quilt than I thought it would be. Wish I had known that from the very beginning and I would have used up all those odds and ends in my stash that were too large for string quilts but too small for anything else instead of cutting into good yardage. Ah well, live and learn. I like what I'm seeing so far and at least I have another pattern to use up small pieces.
Pearl:I have a pile that are 5 1/2 inches and a pile that are 4 inches. and then the pile that are 2 1/2 inces Do we sew the pile that are 5 1/2 inches together and the ones that are 4 inches together?

Next step is to lay out your blocks. Your blocks are not square, don't worry, they don,t need to be.
the object is to alternate the blocks in rows.
Here is my layout. I have 40 blocks, I am choosing to make my quilt 6X6. I will make a macthing pillow out of the other 4 blocks.
first row:
lets break it down:
I flip the blocks for this row so that I sew a set of two with the 4 inch sides together. In this case I have three sets.
now sew your sets together in a row to make your first row.
moving right along:
Second row:
flip the blocks so that the 5 1/2 inch sides are together.
in this case, I have three sets
now sew the sets together to form row 2
Repeat row 1 and 2 until you have all your rows.
now sew your rows together alternating row 1 with row 2, and you have finished step 3.

Wendy and Mimi, now that I have seen your layouts, I am really liking this. I have tried playing around with my blocks some, like what if I made some diagonal cuts, etc. But it would be so much more complicated and waste so much fabric. And it would just become another UFO. So I think I will begin sewing.

I have my first choice of fabrics put together and I must say, I LIKE IT!!! I REALLY like it! I'm kind of excited to get the snowman one put together now and looking forward to the next steps!! I am in the process of ironing it out and will post a pic when I'm done.

Mine are 9 x 8.5 too. I realized that after I layed them out. It makes a big difference on your options. Is anyone going to square them up? The reason I am thinking about it is that you can turn the squares in all directions and get a really scrappy look. I only have five difference fabrics so I want to be able to turn them. Just thinking about it. Not doing anythin yet.
