Do all the rails need to be consistant in size? OR, as a scrappy can different sizes be used? I already have a variety of colors and sizes(widths).
scrappyquilter897,
I say it's your quilt, why not? Do as you please as long as your blocks all come out the same size. :-) Sounds like your idea would be a neat and creative quilt. As they say, there are no quilt police, thank goodness. I have seen other quilts where strips and are cut at different angles and widths and sewn together for blocks so why not use that in a rail fence. Can't wait to see pictures of your finished project.
Hi, for a real rail fence patterned quilt - all the rails are the same size - for a new and modern pattern - that you would design and call your own - they can be any size or shape that you want.
I love the idea of a scrappy rail fence with various widths of the rails. Even better than equally sized ones.

I think it is a great idea. Go for it. Hope you post pics when you finish.

I have always done the same size strips but like Thea says, there really aren't any quilt police to come and arrest you and take you away! LOL I say go for it and be sure and post pictures of your creation.
Hi Scrappyquilter and welcome to QCA. As for the rail fence, I say go for it, that is what I love about quilting, you can do anything you want to.
Life is like a quilt...bits & pieces, joy & sorrow, stitched with love
Scrappyquilter: you sound like my kind of quilter! Use any and all sizes of strips and see how great it looks! Check out Bonnie's site: quiltville.com for ideas for scrap patterns. Go for it and enjoy the scraps!
You can do whatever you want!
Now that is scrappy Jeanine, love it!
They don't even have to be straight rails.
