I basted all my petals first because I wasn't sure how I wanted to put it together then I picked out the centers and basted those. As I finished each flower, I unbasted the center and popped out the paper then pressed. As each paper piece gets 'land locked' so to speak, I'll take the paper out to reuse it on a background piece. There are plenty of paper pieces to start the background with. Do you have an easy way to figure out how much fabric to buy for the background pieces?? My brain hurts just trying to figure out how to figure it out!!

I am the worlds worst quilter for working out fabric, most of the time i dont bother i buy 2 metres of everything and just hope i can get more.

but i have found with the oriental one, i dont have to worry as the inbetween bits are just black fabric so i can always get more.

ha ha ! We think alike Frances! I figured I'd buy 3 yards so I'd have enough for sashing/borders/binding.... but wait! How DO you finish the edge of a GFG? Is it ok to straight cut the sides and add borders? LAIG! Learn as I go!!
Oops, I forgot to tell you how much I like YOURS! I like that long shape of your flowers and the background color is perfect. Are you hand stitiching the Asian ones? Those are really pretty fabrics.

I was going to straight cut the edges and no borders, but if ive lost the will to live be then it might be add borders.

I think the long shape flowers is called field of diamonds and i hand stitch both its more practical for me as i cant always get to a machine.
Frances, your quilts will be beautiful! I love the shape of Field of Diamonds and your background fabric is such a pretty color. The oriental fabrics are gorgeous with the black background. Do you make your own paper pieces? Do you leave them in when you're finished sewing them together?

I do make my own paper pieces as if i buy them over here they are quite expensive, i make them out of all the advertising crap that gets posted through our letter box its the only worthwhile thing to do with it all, and no i dont leave them in like Debbie i just wait until i have all sides of the hexagon surrounded with another hexagon and then i remove the paper and reuse it, mine get reused lots of times before they get thrown away.

Thanks for your quick response, aren't computers wonderful? I'm talking with someone who lives across the sea instantly. The small project I want to work on has only 52- 1/2" hexagons so maybe I could make a few and see how it goes.

I quite agree computers are wonderful, as for 1/2" hexagons not for me, i work on the idea the bigger the better .
What I plan to work on is a small wallhanging, 24.5 x 28.5 so the smaller ones would be better for that, I guess. I'm working out of "Grandmother's Flower Garden" book and some of the patterns call for 1/4" hexagons. Not ready for that.
You are a braver woman than i am, mine are 2" and the oriental ones are about 3".
