Maybe I am old, but it burns me a little bit when I have a subscription to a magazine and I see it on the newsstand before I see it in my mailbox.  Years ago, if you had a subscription, you got it before anyone else could buy it.   Today I went to Barnes & Noble and saw the new issue of Easy Quilts on the newsstand.  I figured I would get it in my mailbox today, at least.  Nope.  No such luck.

To me there are two reasons to subscribe to a magazine: 1) it's cheaper; and 2) you can get it before nonsubscribers.  After all, the magazine company already has our money for an entire year (or more).  I've in essence pledged my loyalty to the magazine; I should get it before those who have not.

This isn't the only magazine that does this, so I'm not necessarily singling Easy Quilts out.  It's just a beef that I have and I needed to vent.  And electronic access doesn't count...I like having the magazine in hand.  It's easier to leaf through and read that way.

I agree with you!  this has been my argument for years!  Nice to see I am not the only one!  But I did get my issue yesterday..........but I understand your vent i have done the same thing many times over many different mag subscriptions! I  Dont want digital.  I want the book in my hand too! and I am 45 years old........just saying lol

Now I'm feeling older than I wanted to (about to turn 47)! LOL  I agree with you both - subscribers should have the magazine first.  Part of the problem for me is the slow Chicago postal system - we often receive store slaes fliers late, magazines after others have had them a week, etc.  It's not as bad in the burbs.  Well, if my magazine isn't here this week, I'll call about it.

I agree with all of you I don't have mine yet either, I always thought that was one of the reasons you subscribe to a magazine was to get it first . Barbara

There is another thing that bugs me:  When the magazine you subscribe to gives away free DVD quilt tips and patterns encased in a plastic bag ON THE NEWSTAND, but YOU don't get it in the mail!  This is what happened to me with Fons & Porter.  I called, and the lady said "Oh, I am sorry, dear! But we do that to get new subscribers!" so - I let my subscription lapse, and now I ONLY buy it on the news stand when I WANT to, and usually it has a dvd attached....  I mean, why don't they take care of the subscribers they have in the first place?  For loyalty, if nothing else?

Bella - I so agree with you - It does upset me when I pay to get it and they have my money for the whole year but they don't bother to make sure that I have mine in my mailbox before those ladies/gents who buy it off the newstand are able to buy it - and yes it bothers me about those DVDs too - I really think that they should take major care of their subscribers - we do pay less then the person who buys it each month on the news stand but when we cancel they don't get any money.  There are a ton of quilt magazines out there and I find that I look more then buy them now - I had quite a few subscriptions and was amazed when month after month the same quilt was in different magazines - or a quilt pattern that I had in a magazine from 1980s was revamped given a new name and brought out again.

I know they have a hard time doing new things - so I think they might think of doing quilts from start to finish and giving tips on that quilt all the way through - plus I love to hear the story about the person who designed the quilt - the whats and whys of it - and if they have it quilted by a professional - what is her story and the whats and whys as to how she decided what pattern to do.

Mavis that quilted the quilts I made for Jodie for Easy Quilts stories to me were wonderful on how she decided what to do and she designed all her own designs - she does have a statler but does all the stuff herself and I just think she is awesome.  It still amazes me when I look at those quilts and was wowwed over when they made their way back to my house.  I truly enjoyed making them but the stress of how fast I had to have them done - well glad I don't have that anymore... I would get the package on Monday and a picture of the quilt - I had to figure out how to make it - make it and ship it to Mavis by Thursday - I could have taken longer but I got a 15% military discount from UPS or FEDEX if I mailed on Thursday - and I knew they would be upset if I didn't get it out by the first Thursday - had to save that money...teehee

I think we just though need to tell EQ, F&P, Better Homes &Gardens and McCalls - that we think they should think about who is really paying their paychecks... and maybe like you quit buying the subscription and just buy the mag once in a while - not sure if they would listen but if we don't say something then they won't know we are upset!

Good Morning all,

I hear your argument of not getting your magazines before they go on newsstand. That is actually a gripe of ours as well. All magazines are sent out at the same time to stores and subscribers. The stores are given explicit instructions to hold the magazines until the newsstand date. Many of the stores follow the protocol, but as you can see, some do not. We have such a large country and have so many stores we send out to that it is difficult to police all the stores. We are thankful for the stores that carry our magazines, we know the people purchasing them are thankful as well.

We truly thank you for being such active members with QCA and appreciate all your comments and suggestions. We strive to bring you the best quilts and the best magazines. Please know we struggle with the same battles you do.

Gini, in your case wouldn't it be fabric for sale?! LOL  You are right about the anticipation.  I find myself looking for an issue of a magazine I haven't "read" for a while just to look at one til the next new one comes!
