Block Measurements for Half square Triangles? Is there a chart for measuring blocks for half square triangles
e.g. 8" finished block, 8-1/2 inch block for just a block, is there a chart for making this block into 2-1/2 sq. triangles? I thought I had this chart in one of my quilting books...unable to find it.
Do I just add 7/8" to finished block size? Making my cutting block 8 7/8" x 8 7/8"?
Do we have a thread for measurements, for charts? Seems to me this would prove of great help and save trying to sift through everything to find such information.
joni, i'm confused. are you trying to cut the 8 inch square into 2 1/2 inch triangles?

I am sure I totally understand what you are asking but here is a very handy site:

I'm trying to have a finshed 8" block made of 2 1/2 square triangles.
Still wishing for some charts for guidance in the future.

To get a 2 1/2 in square using HSTs you need to cut your squares at 2 7/8.

Please, I must not be pharsing this right, I want an 8 inch finished square. Would I need to make my unfinished square 8 and 7/8 of an inch then cut in half diagonally ???
If you are making HSTs out of the 8 1/2 in block then yes it needs to be 8 7/8 inches and then cut diagonally.
Oh, thank you so much!
Joni you are very welcome. Sorry it took awhile to get on the same page.
oh!duh! i though you were asking to make 2 1/2 inch HST. you wanted to make two - triangles from the 8 inches. it takes me a while, joni but i eventually get there.
Don't feel bad Gini --- I was scratching my head too.

Anyone that has an Iphone can get an app that figures these for you. It also figures setting triangle to do on point. I love mine. The app is called QuiltFab and it is free.

Thanks Nana!! I just loaded it on my iPhone. Cool tool.

You are very welcome.; I think it is pretty neat that it will give how much fabric you need and how much backing as well as the setting triangles, etc.
I don't have an IPhone, locked into present phone for 2 years.
I think that being this is a quilting site that it would be most helpful to us oldies and newbies to have some helpful measuring charts for various common needs. JMHO
