Just some of the added options I would have added are books, magazines, and block of the month from stores.

Yeah I basically learned through self teaching from doing a block of the month from joanns on my own and then reading on it, magazines, books and then just grew from there in all different directions.

Custom Quilt Kits:

I learned to quilt in High School Home Ec. class.

Rose - I learned how to sew in Jr High Home Ec but, never learned to quilt then. DGM quilted tops and neighbor did the quilting on her Singer sewing machine. Wish I'd have learned then but, truly, it's a shame that they don't teach these things in school any longer.

I agree, there should be a few more options.  My first class was a Community Ed. class, then I took a few classes from a friend who held classes in her home.  The best answer I could come up with was "friend", although by that time I was already quilting.

I found the Grange had ladies who knew how to quilt, and I wanted to learn so they started having quilting every week, and we kept the Grange Hall supported for thirty years on the money we made!  Meantime, I learned to quilt on a frame, and on to everything else: piecing, machine quilting, .......forward. ho....it's become the main focus of my life, and I will be eternally grateful that those ladies did me the favor of starting me on this journey!

I'm there with you, Gini. I'm pretty much self taught too in all areas of sewing. I once took a quilting class at a local high school's adult community ed classes and ended up helping the instructor with the class. All the students were beginners with no sewing experience except me. The instructor returned my class fee in exchange for helping her with the class. After that experience, I never took a class again. Since then I've learned all kinds of sewing on my own including historical costume and I make them authentically. Oh, dear, I'm rambling again....sorry.

I taught myself to quilt by looking at a picture.  My very first quilt was a very large lap quilt.  I gave it to my son when he got married 23 years ago.
