Buy a scrapbook and the clear pocket sheets. Place pieces and pattern for block on one side and on other side the background fabric block and the work in progress as you sew on your pieces. Use extra pocket for your pattern of complete quilt of the book in which you found the pattern. Books come in 12" x 12" and hold extra pages as you need.
calano, i use a 3 ring school binder with the clear plastic pages. it isn't as big, but works the same.

calano, i've made a "book" out of flannel, that is twelve inches square. it has six pages. when it is laying open, one side is flannel and the other side is plain cotton. i use it as a flannel board to hold my applique pieces in place after they are cut out. i roll it up and tie it with a ribbon to keep the pieces from shifting.
