I'm at work and while quilting would be frowned upon in the restaurant, I figured baking would be Ok... so I made my favorite Orange cookies that my Great Grandmother used to make for me when we were little. They came out great, but the Chef decided he wanted to serve them as a dessert, so I got 1/2 of a broken one! What's up with that?
Anyway they are really easy to make if anyone is in the mood!
1 1/2 c brown sugar
3/4 c shortening
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c milk with 1/2 tsp Baking soda in it
1 orange zested and juiced
1/2 c chopped walnuts
1. cream shortening and sugar in mixer
2. add egg, vanilla, milk
3. take out of mixer and add zest, nuts and flour hand stirring
4. drop on cookie sheets
bake at 340 degr. for about 10 min. until lightly brown
ice when still warm
2tbs butter melted
11/2c powdered sugar
zest of orange
enough juice from orange to thin to icing consistency
Let me know what you think! I think it is not just nostalgia that makes them good!

The recipe sounds great...but since I refuse to turn on the A/C since the heat has only been off for 2 days, baking is not something that is going to be done in this house for awhile. I'm going to keep the recipe handy, though, cuz' it sounds yummy!
Nancy .these cookies sound wonderful, I may just have to make some of them...Barbara

I hope you all like them! My grandmother was a great cook and also a great quilter, so I think of her a lot.

They do sound delicious. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
I make an orange muffin that called for tossing an entire orange into the blender peel and all with other wet ingredients. I just about did'nt make it but it has turned out to be one of my favorites and an asked for recipie. i change it every time I make it with nuts and dried fruit etc.
so, vivian, where's your orange muffin recipe? : ) gini
So, Gini, if I was at home, I would post it. I really changed it from the original, but I'll post the original and mention some of my changes. Maybe tomorrow, or later if I have to go home to check the painters. If they are there, in the rain. sigh.
