I don't usually pre-wash. I have though on rare occasions.

Add me to the no prewash list.  It's too much work and I've never had an issue.  I always give washing instructions and a sheet of color catch with gifts.

Okay, for every rule there's an exception, if I'm going to do hand embfoirdery, I prewash.

it's funny that both for and against are so passionate about their choice....I love the "no stead fast rules" about quilting...do what works for you and have fun!!! what can be better??? well maybe one thing but...

I guess I would not say I was  so much passionate as practical  about my choice, I cannot stand the itching so the logical thing to do is to wash, although, after having done it that way for so long I probably would not want to quit even if it did not make me itch. You know old dog and new tricks sort of thing LOL

Welcome to QCA forums, Melinda! As I've already stated, I don't pre-wash, either. I prefer to think of myself as being to excited to start the new quilt rather than lazy. It's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Hello Melinda,

The only fabric I pre-wash is flannel.  I've never had a problem.  I used to wash everything but saw a show about making fabric and saw the super hot water they used to clean the cotton, etc.  They also showed that the dyes aren't likely to bleed like they used to.   I still wouldn't trust red, but I've still not had trouble.   Flannel I use a lot of and always wash it because it really shrinks.  I make table toppers and I use flannel instead of batting.  Gives it a nice feel but not too bulky.  By pre-shrinking the flannel, I don't worry about it getting all out of shape.  Also, don't need to actually quilt it cuz it's not batting, just another piece of fabric in the center.
