Question 1: What is a "Scant Quarter Inch"?

a. Slightly less than a quarter inch.

b. 240 thousandths of an inch.

c. 6/25 of an inch.

d. All of the above

Question 2: Why should you sew scant quarter inch seams when piecing?

a. So the finished sizes of your pieces come out accurate after sewing them together.

b. To compensate for the width of the thread and the fabric in the folded seam.

c. So your toes don't get cold.

d. Okay, I'm seeing a trend here and going with all of the above again.

Question 3: How can you make sure you sew an accurate scant quarter inch seam allowance?

a. Get a micrometer that can measure thousandths of an inch.

b. Sew three 2 1/2" strips together and adjust your seam allowance until the middle piece ends up measuring 2".

c. Get the amazingly useful Prep-Tool by Guidelines4Quilting.

d. Gee... I'll bet d. all of the above is technically correct, but something tells you're going to say c. is the best way.

Question 4: How can you sew a scant quarter inch if your machine only has a quarter inch guide or no guide at all?

a. Adjust your needle position to make it a scant quarter inch guide.

b. Stick something in front of your presser foot, like mole skin, stacked up tape or a bunch of Post-it-Notes, lined up at a scant quarter inch from your needle to guide your fabric.

c. Use the amazingly useful Prep-Tool to take the guesswork out of adjusting your needle position or to set the handy dandy, just the right thickness to guide your fabric, self adhesive Seam Guide that comes with the Prep-Tool, at a consistent scant quarter inch from your needle!

d. Now you're just embarrassing yourselves with these self promoting all of the above answers. But I have to admit that the Prep-Tool byGuidelines4Quilting does sound amazingly useful.

Question 5: How can you always sew sharp mitered corners and perfect Set-in-Seams?

a. Accurately mark your stopping points an exact scant quarter inch from the edge of your fabric.

d. We'll just jump to d. because we guarantee that you will mark your seam lines perfectly, every time with the amazingly useful Prep-Tool byGuidelines4Quilting. And it's also a Precise Point Trimmer! How's that for Amazingly Useful!

Spotlight on Hoffman Fabrics 2012: Winners Announced

Hoffman California Fabrics’ in-house textile artists design all of the world-famous Hoffman Bali Batiks. The artwork for the designs is sent to the Hoffman facility in Bali, Indonesia, where craftspeople create the metal stamps used in the batik process. The Hoffman Bali Batik process is completely entirely by hand. Being an eco-conscious water family of surfers and boaters, the Hoffman Family invested nearly a quarter-million dollars into water-treatment equipment at the Bali facility to remove the wax and low-residue dyes used in the process, and thus protect the local environment. Likely it is the only major batik manufacturer operating in Indonesia that has done so.

Hoffman California Fabrics works with unique artists in creating special signature screenprint collections. One such artist is Rennie Rau Marquez, who spent 20 years as a concept designer for Disney Imagineering. Hoffman is delighted to have been successful in transferring Rennie’s whimsical “Ark For Birds” into a beautiful screenprint collection. See more of Rennie’s brightly colored folkart at her website.

Izumi Pond

“Izumi” is the Japanese word for "fountain" or "spring," and how fitting that our screenprint collection would depict a glorious oasis with koi fish and water birds. Inspired by the elegance of silk kimonos, Izumi suggests Asian-art brushpainting. Minimalist lines and strong color make for a modern freshness. The barest touch of gold metallic suggests gold thread running through the fabrics. The project “Izumi Pond” designed by Toby Lischko of Gateway Quilts ‘N’ Stuff features octagon blocks and whips us into a 63” X 77” quilt.
