Spotlight on Hoffman Fabrics 2012: Winners Announced

Hoffman California Fabrics’ in-house textile artists design all of the world-famous Hoffman Bali Batiks. The artwork for the designs is sent to the Hoffman facility in Bali, Indonesia, where craftspeople create the metal stamps used in the batik process. The Hoffman Bali Batik process is completely entirely by hand. Being an eco-conscious water family of surfers and boaters, the Hoffman Family invested nearly a quarter-million dollars into water-treatment equipment at the Bali facility to remove the wax and low-residue dyes used in the process, and thus protect the local environment. Likely it is the only major batik manufacturer operating in Indonesia that has done so.

Hoffman California Fabrics works with unique artists in creating special signature screenprint collections. One such artist is Rennie Rau Marquez, who spent 20 years as a concept designer for Disney Imagineering. Hoffman is delighted to have been successful in transferring Rennie’s whimsical “Ark For Birds” into a beautiful screenprint collection. See more of Rennie’s brightly colored folkart at her website.

Izumi Pond

“Izumi” is the Japanese word for "fountain" or "spring," and how fitting that our screenprint collection would depict a glorious oasis with koi fish and water birds. Inspired by the elegance of silk kimonos, Izumi suggests Asian-art brushpainting. Minimalist lines and strong color make for a modern freshness. The barest touch of gold metallic suggests gold thread running through the fabrics. The project “Izumi Pond” designed by Toby Lischko of Gateway Quilts ‘N’ Stuff features octagon blocks and whips us into a 63” X 77” quilt.

Here's How to Enter:

Fun Facts About Hoffman Fabrics:

In 1924, by Rube Hoffman, a New York textile jobber, founded Hoffman California Fabrics, selling wool flannels to California department stores and clothing manufacturers. Soon, he was buying greige goods (undyed fabric) to imprint his own designs. Rube played an important role in the growth of California's textile industry. Learn more about their fascinating history.
More than 800 designs of colorful screenprints and luscious Bali batiks are created by their Design Department each year.

At Quilt Market just a few weeks ago, Hoffman Fabrics announced a revolutionary line of fabric! "Coming At You! - Hoffman 3D" is viewable as three-dimensional with the help of special 3D glasses. That's right, a fabric with 3D special effects -- the first such collection in quilting! It will hit quilt shops in August - but you could be one the early birds who receive it before that!
