Spotlight on Hoffman Fabrics: Winners Announced!

Quilters and sewers come to Hoffman California Fabrics for the best in original screenprints and hand-dyed batiks and handpaints.

Fun Facts About Hoffman Fabrics:

  • In 1924, by Rube Hoffman, a New York textile jobber, founded Hoffman California Fabrics, selling wool flannels to California department stores and clothing manufacturers. Soon, he was buying greige goods (undyed fabric) to imprint his own designs. Rube played an important role in the growth of California's textile industry. Learn more about their fascinating history.
  • More than 800 designs of colorful screenprints and luscious Bali batiks are created by their Design Department each year.
  • The Hoffman Challenge is celebrating its 24th Anniversary this year. Scroll down on this page to read a fascinating account on how the challenge fabric is selected.
  • Stay up-to-date with their new fabric releases by "liking" them on Facebook!

And last but not least:

  • At Quilt Market just a few weeks ago, Hoffman Fabrics announced a revolutionary line of fabric! "Coming At You! - Hoffman 3D" is viewable as three-dimensional with the help of special 3D glasses. That's right, a fabric with 3D special effects -- the first such collection in quilting! It will hit quilt shops in August - but you could be one the early birds who receive it before that!

Three lucky winners will randomly receive one of three Quillow kits featuring the new "Coming At You! - Hoffman 3D" line of fabric!  ($150 value)

The "H3D Outer Space Quillow" is made with the spaceship pattern (J8610 18-Royal) and makes into a 42" X 68" quillow, complete with a spaceship appliqued pocket on the "pillow side" to hold our special Hoffman 3-D glasses. Boys and girls will enjoy a "virtual space" experience when they view the fabric with a pair of our 3-D glasses, which is included in the kit. The coordinating "blender fabrics" in the quillow are selected Hoffman Bali Style 1895 Watercolors in vivid hues of red, blue, green, yellow and orange.

The "H3D Butterfly Quillow" made with the butterfly jungle pattern (J8611 8-Green) makes into a 41" X 70" quillow, complete with a butterfly appliqued pocket on the "pillow side" to hold our special Hoffman 3-D glasses. Boys and girls will enjoy a "virtual butterfly hunting" experience when they view the fabric with a pair of our 3-D glasses, which is included in the kit. The coordinating "blender fabrics" in the quillow are selected Hoffman Bali Style 1895 Watercolors in vivid hues of red, blue, green, yellow, orange and magenta.

The "H3D Undersea Quillow" is made with the sea life pattern (J8612 18-Royal) and makes a 42" X 67" quillow, complete with a fish appliqued pocket on the "pillow side" to hold our special Hoffman 3-D glasses. Boys and girls will enjoy a "virtual underwater" experience without getting wet when they view the fabric with a pair of our 3-D glasses, which is included. The coordinating "blender fabrics" in the quillow are selected Hoffman Bali Style 1895 Watercolors in bright hues of red, blue, green and orange.

Here's how to enter:

In the comment section below, jot down which 3-D theme you think Hoffman Fabrics should design next!

All entries must be posted by midnight (EST) June 30th 2011. One entry per person please!

Please note: You must be logged in to Quilters Club of America to leave a comment. If you haven't created an account, it's easy! All you need is a username, password and email address.

And the winners are....

cgferrell - Butterfly Quillow

MAGGIE WARREN - Outer Space quillow

Carole - Undersea Quillow

Congratulations! You'll be receiving an email soon from QCA Peg.

As crazy as this sounds, a Barbie theme would be a money maker. I know of adult women who are paying thousands of dollars for retro Barbies, their cloths and their vintage houses. Check out Barbie on ebay and see what they're selling Vintage Barbies for. Someone in the UK spent thousands on a NIB 1969 Barbie at Christy's auction. Little girls still love the new Barbies, so yeah, I can see Mom's buying Barbie fabric for quilts, cloths, doll cloths, etc. I just finished making a tiny Barbie pink quilt for my girlfriend. Now I wish I hadn't lost my Barbie back in the 60s. I'd be rich.

H3D is all the rage. I know that the holidays are coming so I would love to see a Holiday theme.  Problem is choosing one. Thanksgiving would be nice with Pilgrims, Indians, Horns of Plenty, and Turkeys running around.  Then I think of Halloween and a 3D witch flying through the moon and the black cat sitting y the steps greeting the trick or treaters.  But alas, I have to choose the Christmas Season.  There are so many was a H3D quilt, wall hanging, or table set could be designed using the Christmas Season.  What a joy to see a 3D nativity , or just the blessing of the Christmas Star.  Then turning to Santa and Rudolph or the elves and of course a 3D Christmas tree would be awesome.  Yes, I would love to see a H3D collection devoted to the Christmas holiday.

For little ones: Paddington bear, Pooh characters, Mickey and other Disney characters. For older kids: Night sky with stars and moons and the Aurora Borealis; camping or swimming theme. How about movie stuff: candies like Ike and Mike, Jr Mints, Whoppers, Twizzlers, popcorn and Cokes for slumber parties. A winter scene with snowflakes, snowmen/women, mittens & scarves, a sleigh, cardinals for holiday visitors. Peonies and roses in all sorts of containers, vases, teacups, teapots, old wash basin type pitcher and bowl. I also like the sewing/quilting theme idea: thimbles, scissors, treadle machines, spools, pin cushions, maybe a wallhanging quilt or bed quilt over a rocking chair. State flowers or birds or trees with their state name. Wow, so many ideas!

There is so much to see if you look up close. 3) The reedy or weedy side of a lake. 4) The busy side of a lake (where all the boats are). And, my favorite, 5) Horses.  Of the three fabric themes shown, I love the rainforest idea.  So many possibilities.

I would love to see some theme fabrics done to represent Americana.  Not just the red/white/blue of the flag, but perhaps what makes this country great: farming, industry, freedom, the people.  you could do nature sights(redwoods to grand canyon etc) or( species or animals native to North America), farm animals and machinery, people who have made a difference to America, have influenced this country in a positive manner.  Wow!  Am I getting carried away here or what.  Anyway, love all of your fabric ideas---do a rainforest frog fabric on a background of tropical foliage....would be great!  Thanks

I think Hoffman should consider the Outerspace Quillow 3-D line, especially if you combine that with Judy Niemeyer's  "Total Eclipse" pattern. The combination would be Out of this world.

I think the next 3-D theme Hoffman fabrics should explore next is A theme  with a William Morris tapestry quality. Acanthus leaves, peacocks, and orange trees, Words woven in the design that have a healing and calming effect. "Center yourself, Believe in yourself"  etc.  A Renessaince nostalgia with a Modern  effect. Teals, blues, olive and spring greens, orange, yellow and lavender.
