I made this quilt, Golden Hawaiian Memories for my mother to commemorate our family trip to Hawaii to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. The blocks are hand appliqued, the quilt is machine quilted. I tried to use traditional looking Hawaiian quilt blocks and incorporated some of the wonderful family photos we took into the blocks. One of the blocks has hearts and golden wedding rings for the anniversary. As are all quilts, this was truly a labor of love.

Carla Gentry

"Quilting and Appliqué Fun" by Faye

The patterns for the stitching in the blocks was taken from a book by Keryn Emmerson called Beautiful Quilts as You Go.
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliqued and Hand Quilted From the book, "Celebration of Life" by Barb Adams and Alma Allen This project began as a BOM until the shop went out of business 3 months into the quilt. I then had to pick fabric to finish the blocks and decide how to quilt it. This was my first applique quilt. I am partial to Baltimore Album Quilts and decided that it was time for me to tackle one. It began in 2004, then put on hold and brought back out in 2006 and finished in 2009. Each block has about 18 hours in applique and 18 hours in quilting. I enjoyed every minute and am ready to start another.... I entered the quilt in the State Fair of Texas 2009 and walked away with Second Place. I was excited. --

For Christmas this year (2009), my nephew asked for a quilt with a beach scene. The concept and project were quite challenging. How does one go about creating an ocean, beach and sky with to reflect nature's variances in depth and color? I accomplished it piecing uneven 6" strips of fabric. The fish, people, sun and birds are machine appliquéd. If you look closely - you will see a seahorse and two lobsters in the ocean. With a little imagination and a lot of creativity - you can accomplish anything. Happy Quilting.

"One Block Wonder" by Betsy Gaither

A friend and I just completed a class for the "One Block Wonder" (book by Maxine Rosenthal). We both could not wait to get started. I would not have ordinarily purchased this particular fabric, but it was recommended for the colors and movement of the background. I've been quilting for about 3 years and this project ranks right at the top for FUN. Each block is a surprise. Then the real challenge begins with the placement to your preference. I've not decided if the FLOWERS will remain on the border. I'm letting them GROW there for a while before I plant (applique) them on.
