This quilt that I call "A Patriotic Diagonal Nine Patch" is my first Citizen SAM (Support America's Military) quilt. Mailing it along with a 20 X 30 matching pillow case was kind of emotional because I knew that ultimately it would be laid across the body of a critically injured soldier being transported. The wounded soldiers are transported from Iraq and Afghanistan on converted cargo planes which have minimal heat. The quilts are also used in Intensive Care Units of Combat Hospitals as part of patient care.

Rules regarding color (Red, White, and Blue) and also size, 48 X 78 to fit a stretcher or gurney are listed on the web site. If you are interested at all take a look at the web site. There are many more projects to choose from such as Operation Santa (the Christmas Stocking project), knitting and crocheting scarves and helmet liners, Adopt a Soldier, Cards and Letters of Support, etc. They also encourage Veterans to correspond with the soldiers. I hope you will give the web site a look if you haven't already. http://www.citizensam.org/ I worked out the measurements for my quilt on EQ7. Would be happy to share.
