Getting Started - Gather and Cut Your Fabrics

This quilt requires high contrast between your fabrics. You may choose either option: Scraps or the Two-color version.

If you choose to do a scrap version, you shouldn't use too many medium value fabrics. A few can add interest, and you'll need to decide whether they are lights or darks. Perhaps the easiest way to make a successful scrap quilt would be to use a common background as the light (or dark, as you choose) and scraps for the remaining pieces.

See the cutting information for yardage required to make the scrap version. Borders are the only additional pieces you will need to cut.

Fabric Requirements

Main Fabric                     2 1/4 yards
Background Fabric       2 1/4 yards
Border                            2 yards
            (use more of the main fabric or another.)
Binding                           3/4 yard
Batting                            twin size

Other Supplies
Rotary cutter, mat, and rulers (6" x 24" & a small square)
Thread to blend with your fabrics
The Angler ® optional

Use the following information to cut your fabrics prior to beginning the construction of your quilt.

Cutting Instructions
Strips are cut across the width of the fabric, making them approximately 42" long with selvages on each of the short ends. For best results, prewash and press all fabrics prior to cutting.

Two Fabric Version

Main Fabric

            Cut three strips 6 1/2" wide
            Cut six strips 4 1/2" wide
                        Subcut those strips into twenty-four 4 1/2" squares and
                        Forty-eight 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
            Cut six strips 2 1/2" wide
                        Leave three of these as strips and subcut the remaining
                        three into forty-eight 2 1/2" squares

Background Fabric

Same as for main fabric.

Scrap Version
Divide your fabrics into lights and darks, and don't include very many mediums. Use numerous fabrics. Be aware that they will be used randomly throughout the piecing of the quilt. As I mentioned in the pattern description, you may want to use a control background fabric and scrappy accents.

Darks

Cut twelve 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangles
Cut twelve 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangles
Cut twenty-four 4 1/2" squares
Cut forty eight 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles
Cut forty eight 2 1/2" squares

Lights

Same as for darks.
