construction of the quilt top. This will be your final step with reveal at the
end. I hope that everyone has had fun so far. I have enjoyed sharing this
pattern with each of you.

First print
off the layout pattern so that it will be easier to follow. As I do each row I
like to fold the row that I have just finished down so that it is easier to
keep up with where you are.

Now start
assembly with the upper right hand corner. Take one of your light 2 ½ ” x 8”
strips and sew the triangles cut from your 2 7/8” squares to each end as shown
in the diagram. Now sew one of the dark triangles cut from the 6 ¼ ” square to
the upper edge. You will result in a segment that looks like this.

Now we will do a block row.
Take one of the 2 ½ ” x 8” light strips and to the left side of one of the
blocks. Now sew one of the dark triangles cut from the 12” square to the
outside edge of the sashing strip. Sew another sashing strip to the right hand
side of the block and another dark triangle to the outside edge to end up with
a segment that looks like the picture below.

Now we will do a sashing /
cornerstone row. Start with a dark triangle from the 2 7/8” square. Sew this to
the left hand edge of a light 2 ½ ” x 8” strip. Now add one of the strips with
the dark square attached. Continue in this manner until you have added enough
sashing/cornerstone strips to make the length of the row. End with another dark
triangle. Now sew this strip to the previous segment matching cornerstones to the
sashing strips. Pin all seam intersections. You will end with a segment as
pictured.

Continue constructing rows in
this manner until your top is completed. Each row will always start and end
with a dark triangle. Use your layout sheet to keep track of which triangles
and number of blocks or sashing/cornerstone strips needed in the row. Match all
rows by matching your cornerstones with your sashing strips. Consider your 2
7/8” triangles a cornerstone when adding rows. Consider your dark setting triangle
from the 12” blocks as a block when adding your rows. All of the triangles from
your 6 ¼ ” blocks is a corner of your quilt top.

Now we can start adding
borders. When I first started working with the pattern I had planned to use my
light fabric as my inner border but changed my mind after the top was completed
and decided to use my dark fabric as my inner border. I cut 8 2 ½ ” strips to
use as the inner border. I had picked a black/white/red print to use as my outer
border. I decided to use 1 ½ ” strips of solid red as my second border. I used
5 ½ ” strips of my print to use as my outer border. This is my completed City
Streets.

I hope you have enjoyed yourself working on this
quilt. The name City Streets came about because the movement of the blocks made
me think of the busy city streets with building on every corner. I have had a
wonderful time working with each of you on this project.

A pdf version of these instructions can be downloaded by clicking here.

The steps for making this Mystery Quilt can all be found here: Mystery Quilt Workshop

Have questions or need help? Post your questions in the Mystery Quilts 8 Group here: Mystery Quilt #8

sets for our blocks. You will need to make 36 segments with HSTs, nine patches,
stripes as shown in the picture. This will be known as segment A.

Next you will need to do 36
segments with light 2” squares and HSTs as shown in picture below. This will be
known as segment B.

Next you will need 18
segments made with light 2” squares and vertical stripes as shown in picture
below. This will be known as segment C.

Now we can start configuring
our blocks. Sew one segment B with the dark portion of the HSTs toward the
bottom with one segment A. This will look like the picture below.

Next sew the C segment to the
nine patch edge as shown below.

Now sew another nine patch
segment with the dark portion of the HST pointing upward onto the previous
segment as shown in Picture below.

Now sew another B segment
onto the bottom with the dark HSTs pointing upward as shown in picture below.

Your block should now measure
8”. You will have 18 blocks when you complete sewing all your segments
together.

A pdf version of these instructions can be downloaded by clicking here.

City Streets Mystery Quilt Schedule:

Friday, March 15th: Step 1 Fabric Requirements and Cutting Instructions
Friday, March 29th: Step 2
Friday, April 5th: Step 3
Friday, April 12th: Step 4
Friday, April 19th: Step 5
Friday, April 26th: Step 6

Use 2 fabrics with sharp contrast such as Black and White, Black and Red , pastels with Black, etc. Use fabrics that read as solids. NO LARGE PRINTS. Save your large print for the wide border. This pattern is designed by Nancy Boone aka Nana.

Fabric Requirements:

Dark fabric 2 yds You will probably have a little of this leftover but I would rather you have a little too much than not enough.

Light fabric 3 yds You will have a little of this leftover as well.

Border fabric 1 ¼ yds set aside for now

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

DARK FABRIC

Cut 1 (12”) strip subcut into 3 (12”) squares Cut the squares in half diagonally twice in X pattern to make 4 triangles per square

Cut 1 (6 1/4”) strip subcut into 2 (6 1/4”) squares Cut each square in half diagonally to make 2 triangles per square

Cut 1 (2 7/8”) strip subcut into 8 (2 7/8”) squares Cut the squares diagonally to make 16 triangles

Cut 2 (2 1/2”) strips by wof subcut into 17 (2 1/2”) squares. Depending on the width of your fabric you may be able to do this with just one strip.

Cut 13 (1”) strips by wof subcut strips into 8 1/2” segments

Cut 7 (2 1/2”) strips by wof subcut into 108 (2 1/2”) squares If you like to do your HSTs with Thangles or the Triangulations program you will need to use whatever size strips the program calls for to end up with 2” HST squares . This measurement is prior to sewing the square into the block.

LIGHT FABRIC

Cut 7 (2 1/2”) strips by wof subcut into 108 (2 1/2”) squares. If you like to do your HSTs with Thangles or the Triangulations program you will need to use whatever size strips the program calls for to end up with 2” HST squares. This measurement is prior to sewing the square into the block.

Cut 5 (2”) strips by wof subcut into 90 (2”) squares

Cut 13 (1”) strips by wof subcut into 8 1/2” segments

Cut 10 (2 1/2”) strips by wof subcut into 48 (8”) segments
