When sewing a number of flying geese3 blocks do you back stitch to amke sure stitches are secure?

So easy instructions for flying geese. Thanks a bunch. Don't have "Flying Geese" template, but do have Fons and Porter Half and Quarter Ruler. Haven't tried it yet, but wonder can this ruler be used for flying geese?
