Q: I know what a walking foot for my sewing machine is, however I have never heard of a rolling foot. What is it and is it used for anything besides sewing in the ditch?

A: A rolling foot is an alternative to an Ultraglide Foot. People use it for more control and less friction when sewing on imitation leather, vinyl, elastic, and velvet.

Q: I had to move and all my material is packed away in boxes. Some of them I put in storage, in HOT Texas weather. I didn't get climate controlled storage. So my question is, will it hurt the material to stay packed away in boxes, whether in the heat or not, for a long period of time?

A: As long as the fabric is dry, it shouldn't cause a problem. Don't store it in plastic, as it can't breathe. Pillowcases are good, as are sheets, or even boxes. It will be like Christmas for you when you finally get it all unpacked!

Today at the Cabin : I am really OVER the cold and damp. It's been raining for 3 days and it's just above freezing. Tonight through Friday we're supposed to get rain with temps below freezing. That's never a good thing. But tonight is our sewing group so a temporary reprieve will be had! As for the rain, I look at it this way, it washes the salt off the roads so I can ride my bike!

Q: Do you know of any natural way to protect my quilts from moths?

K: I have heard that the herb southernwood, is a natural way to keep moths away. Maybe your local herb store would have some.

Charity Quilts....

I belong to a newly formed quilt guild and we have taken on the project of making quilts for chemo patients at a local cancer center I am in the search for orphan blocks that we could turn into beautiful quilts for these chemo patients they see about 1000 patients a year and we took 40 quilts the first round in December and they are all gone and we are trying to get quilts to them about every other month but we need other peoples help with this the response that we have gotten from the nurses doctors and patients are just overwhelming any help would be appreciated. If you send me your email i will put you in a group to see the pictures as the quilts are finished and see what a difference this has made in someone's life;

Hey, Kaye? What Are 3-D quilts?

Quilts can be considered 3-D because they are or because they appear to be.
Quilts can have the added dimension by having pieces that extend above the surface of the quilt, or the quilt can appear to be 3-D because of the way the colors are used (3-D look).

Pieces that extend above the surface of the quilt can be appliqued or pieced.

Applique pieces need to be finished by facing the piece with another fabric or by leaving the edges raw. These pieces extend (the edges are not sewn down). For instance with a flower, the center might be sewn to the quilt, but the leaves and/or flowers might be only attached at the stem. I have used this 3-D applique technique in my patterns "Stained Glass Diamonds", "Life in the Meadow", and "Tumbling Winds".

Pieced 3-D can be accomplished by folding the fabric and inserting the raw edges into the seam lines. The fold would extend above the quilt. A square folded diagonally might be used in pinwheel designs, such as my pattern, "Pinwheel Squares" and "Floral Stars".

3-D Look Quilt

Often, this look can be accomplished with the use of color and the arrangement of color. When you think you can look into a quilt, it is usually the color arrangement that does that. For instance, in my pattern "Stacking My Blocks", the dark, medium and light colored fabrics give a -D look. In "Braided Table Runners" and "A-maze-ing", it is the arrangement of dark to light shades. In "Chrysanthemum", the medium and light fabrics make each piece of Dresden Plate seem to fold.

Quilt Preservation....

Q: I am the fourth generation to inherit all the beautiful very fragile quilt squares in my family. They are crazy quilt fashion, backed by muslin but are too fragile to even think of putting together. Someone once told me you can make a fabric book of each one by a process museums use but I don't know where to look for the information. Some of these date back to the 1800's with satin squares depicting the event and date. Hopefully I can preserve them for the next generation but am now in my seventies and decided I had better get with the program and find out how to do it. Would appreciate any help you may be able to provide!

Jacquelyn would use a plastic report cover.

Connie would frame them for all to enjoy.

Gloria: If i love those quilt squares I would take them to a hobby store and have them framed with the date. That way she could look at them all the time, and when it it time for them to be pass down the next person could enjoy them hanging on there wall and think of the the last person that took care of them.

Sue suggests contacting someone at a quilt museum that has the actual hands-on knowledge of how best to do this and ask for their information and guidance.

Annette: Maybe fuse a light weight muslin on the back of the blocks and transparent illusion on the top. Sew the blocks together, choose a backing and tie instead of quilting. This should stabilize it to be enjoyed for many years.

Maurine: thinking of the acid in things that could ruin old quilts/squares. I wonder instead of report covers if going to the pages for a scrapbook would be safer?

Sandy says; "There is a special quilt or fabric netting that used to be available that can be gently stitched over the fragile cloth. I haven't bought any for years though. Please don't store fabric in plastic as the humidity may cause mold. Write to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC or your favorite local museum for specific advice."

Today at the Cabin : Well, it's still cold, but a lot of the snow is gone. The chickens have been let out of the coop and are happily scratching at the frozen ground. Where last week was snow, now there's quite a bit of dirt showing. Lots of piles of leaves for them to scratch around in and they are happy, happy, happy. The eggs these gals lay are so good (and healthy and nutritious too), way better than the store bought variety!

Q: I am working on a project using a reverse applique technique.

When the appliques are complete, I am finding it difficult to get all the paper off the back. Is there a real long term problem with allowing the paper to stay in there? Obviously it will not show once the batting and backing are attached to my block.

K: I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to leave the paper on. There are quite a few older quilts that I know of that still have paper in them. But if you are sewing the paper on, you might try using freezer paper and ironing it on instead.

Q: I used a washable marker and when I put my quilt in the washer, it still had marks on it....

Is it too late to try to do anything besides sew some decorative stitches on it, or should I start a new block that took hours to embroider. Hope you can help.

K: I have heard but never tried myself, that hairspray is wonderful for getting ink out. You spray it on, then rinse in cold water. Repeat as necessary. People have assured me this is a fool proof method.

Hi Quilters! I am really excited about teaching in Alaska on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. While I have been there several times, this will be my first time to present a seminar in Fairbanks. I love Alaska in the summer; the last time I was there it was in the 90's and I got a sunburn. When adding binding, leave a quarter inch of batting when trimming to pad the binding. It makes for a nicer edge......Kathy I use green painter's tape to mark lines on my quilts to hand quilt. You can get the tape in 1/4", 1/2" and so on. It leaves no mark on your quilt and actually helps to keep stitches straight....Meme

Little Known Independence Day Facts....The Real Independence Day? The Declaration of Independence was announced on July 4th, though the formal signing didn't occur until August 2nd, and the colonies actually voted to accept it on July 2nd. So you may wonder - what day is the real Independence Day? Old Glory Did you know, that there have been 28 versions of the U.S flag to date, and that the most recent one, designed after Alaska and Hawaii joined the union, was the result of a school project? Robert Heft was 17 when he came up with the flag design in 1958. He originally got a B- on the project, but when his pattern won the national competition to become the next flag, his teacher raised his grade to an A. A Patriotic Death? Three American presidents have died on the fourth of July. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, in 1826. They had been rivals in everything, even about who would live longest. Adams' last words were about his long-time foe: "Thomas Jefferson lives!" In fact, Jefferson had died just five hours earlier, but Adams hadn't gotten the message. James Monroe is the third president to die on July 4th, but he died in 1831. From the Farmer's Almanac....

Hi Quilters!

Summer weather hasn't quite settled in in Northern Michigan yet. I have been busy finishing up several new patterns. Samples have to be sewn and instructions written. A few of them should be ready this summer.

Really, really cleaning my sewing studio is on the to-do list, but I must admit it keeps getting shoved further back every day. I would rather be sewing.

We are all busy getting kits ready for my classes on the quilting cruise that leaves Port Canaveral on June 5 for the Eastern Caribbean. For one of the classes, I have completely redone the Savage Star pattern with only two color families (red and black). The center diamonds are fussy cut using the View & Do Diamond Shape. The bordering strips can be cut with either the Diamond Shape or the Starmaker 6, as in the original pattern. This new version will be available later this summer. If you are going on the cruise, Kayla and I will see you on board.

I will be in Colorado Springs for a few days to attend the HS graduation of one of my granddaughters, Lisa. If you have a copy of my book, The 6 Hour Quilt, you can see Lisa's picture on the back.

I hope to see some of you in Reno, NV or in Fairbanks, AK this summer.

Kaye shares her ideas on Sewing Machine Maintenance.

The outside of your machine can be cleaned with a damp rag. A mild cleaner can be sprayed onto the cloth before cleaning.

Lint from fabric and thread needs to be cleaned from the bobbin area. Use a dry cloth to remove most of it. Canned air can be used carefully-don't blow the lint down into the machine.Clean the lint from between the feed dogs. I use a screw driver to do this.
The best reference is the manual that comes with your machine. You can get a copy of the manual on-line. Search "sewing machine manual". Choose from the different sewing machine companies listed.
Change your needle regularly, at least after each quilt or garment. Use the type of needle made for the type of sewing you do. Use a good quality thread to reduce the lint.
These simple to do cleaning steps can delay trips to your dealer for more serious repairs.
If your machine needs to be oiled, use only sewing machine oil and use it sparingly in the holes provided. Your manual will show you where to oil it.

Did You Know - Blocking a Quilt....

Do you know how to block a quilt? When you take the time to block your quilt, it allows you to square up your corners, so that it will hang flatter when it is displayed. Blocking also allows you to straighten and square up uneven edges on your quilt, and can help make your applique stand out more. There are two different ways to block your quilts, wet or dry. When you dry block it, it means the quilt is completely dry when you pin it into the shapes and dimensions you want. You will have to add moisture though, in one of these ways:
A commercial steamer.
Passing your steam iron over it.
Spraying it with a spray bottle.
When you have a project that is need of just a bit of shaping or adjustment, dry blocking would work the best.
When you wet block, you immerse your quilt in water and put it on a gentle spin. Then you either pin it to a blocking board or a rug on the floor, depending on the size of your quilt. Wet blocking works best for quilts that need a lot of shaping, such as applique quilts or blocks that have been quilted. When wet, the fibers are easier to pull into the shape you need. Whether you use the wet or dry method, pinning your quilt is the most important part of this process. When you pin the quilt, the pins hold it in the shape you want it to be in, while it dries. Your pins have to be less than 1" apart so that your edges don't become scalloped. It is also important to allow complete and thorough drying time, while your quilt is pinned in place. You will be amazed how much easier it will be to hang your quilt evenly after this process.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Eileen says: I save the triangles cut from piecing binding, or when putting a small square on the corner of a larger square or rectangle then sewing diagonally, and any small pieces and inch or so wide. I use these as leaders and enders. It keeps my fabric from being poked down into the hole on the throat plate, AND I end up with pieces for a scrappy quilt. The triangles sewed together make a Friendship Star.

Sue says: Do not be afraid to ask questions from the internet, your local quilt shop, and other quilters on forums all have been a great help to me because I am new to quilting.

Did You Know??

It would be a perfect quilting world, if all of our rows were equal in length. But...we live in the real world, where rows may not be the same length and that's fine. Quilting is supposed to be fun and we all know, "ripping out" definitely is not! To help improve your skills, here are some thoughts to consider when you're having problems.
1) Were all the strips cut the same width? If not, maybe you need to practice your rotary cutting.
2) Were all the seam allowances the same? Once again, practice makes perfect when it comes to sewing.
3) Did you press your strips without steam, from the right side of the fabric?
4) If you do have to trim your strips, make sure you trim the top and bottom, equal amounts.
Checking these things can save you a lot of time and maybe a big headache too!

Today I played around a little. I have a new pattern from Kaye Wood, Brick Path. It's a pattern for A Quarter Quilt, quarter the bed size, fabric, time, and money. I really like the design, but I don't want anything that size, so to try out the pattern, I decided to just make a couple of blocks. I actually made three more, and I'm not sure what all I'm going to do with them all, but I really do like the design.

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Joyce says: When sewing with Monofilament thread. You know the stuff that is clear and you cannot see the end to put in the needle? Do not work so hard. Just take out that permanent pen and color the end and you can see it to put it in the needle.

Sheila says: I keep a plastic grocery bag by my sewing machine, where I deposit fabric, batting and scrapbooking scraps. When I fill three bags, I donate them to a local daycare center for the children's arts & crafts. They're thrilled, and I'm glad it's all being recycled!.

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

This is the fabric I used to make the quilt below. I used the Starmaker 6 to make the blocks out of 6 layers of the same piece. Sewed three of them together then sewed the two blocks of three together. Making the multi designed blocks. Then I had to sew Y seams to get the quilt put together. All blocks are different. I plan to use the quilt as a ME SEE Quilt, a child looking for the animals that are in the border of the quilt, then finding them in the quilt....Joyce

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Julie says: Always write down where you bought which fabric. If you need or want more, you will be able to go back to the right store.

Marcia says: Try a practice block before cutting up all your fabric. You may find errors in the directions, that you don't like the way it looks, or the block is too hard or too easy for your purposes. You can then switch to another quilt pattern and have not wasted time and/or fabric.

Kaye's in Puyallup, WA this week. I remember last year at this time, when Kaye and Kayla were in Puyallup there were threats of a storm surge due to earthquakes in the Pacific Rim. It didn't happen, and that's a good thing, but I'll always remember that.

	Show & Tell... I would like to share this quilt I made. I work for the US Army and military doctors. One of the doctors is retiring and I thought what a fitting going away quilt. This design is "Starring the Eagle" by Dian Barnard and uses Kaye's Starmaker 6. The original design calls for an eagle applique, which I did on the first one I made. Then I came across the embroidery "Eagle Sketch", A Design by Lyn. I have attached a close up of that....Sydna

Kaye on Strip Piecing...

Strip piecing is what I do! When quilters realize that, their comment is "I've done that; it is such fun."

95% of the piecing I do is strip piecing and I haven't discovered all the possibilities of strip piecing.
What does that mean? Strip piecing means that strips are sewn together before any pieces are cut. And the type of pieces that can be cut number in the hundreds, many of which can be found in my Book and DVD, Starmaker Design Concepts. How do the Starmakers fit into the strip piecing concept? First strips are sewn together into strip sets; then the strip sets are cut in squares or rectangles OR with the Starmakers, cut into diamonds, triangles, stars, kaleidoscopes, etc, etc.... The opposite of strip piecing is template cutting, which is not nearly as accurate. Strip piecing is faster, easier, wastes less fabric, and is usually more accurate.
To strip piece a 9-patch block: Sew 2 different strip sets: sew a dark, light, dark strip set together; sew a light, dark, light strip set together. Cut these strip sets using a ruler and rotary cutter in segments that are the same width as the individual strips were cut. Each row of 3 squares is already sewn together.
To cut a 9-patch block: Using a square template or a ruler, cut individual squares. Sew 3 squares together into each of 3 rows. Sew 3 rows together.
If you haven't made at least 100 strip pieced quilts, you haven't really explored the concept of strip piecing;-)

Tips From Our Readers....

My Tip O' the Day is this, I love love love press and seal kitchen wrap. I use it to wrap up thread spools so they don't unravel. I use it to make baggies for projects I am working on. Especially Applique pieces. That stuff even works on the backside of rulers to keep them from sliding while cutting. It is great! I am sure that there are other uses I will find for it! Great stuff.....Vickie

Because I don't like to wear gloves when quilting I cut a piece of non-skid rubberized kitchen shelf liner about 4x6 and lay it between my hand and the quilt. Easy to move with my hand, and because it is no bigger than my hand, no chance of sewing it into the quilt....Rhonda

UFO's and PIG's - You Wanted To Know!

What in the world are these? I got lots and lots of questions last week. Most of you knew what the UFO was (Un-Finished Object) but I only had one person who knew what a PIG was (other than my farmers, lol). Well here's the official answer: A PIG is a Project In a Grocery (or Garbage) Bag!

This sounds silly and I am a beginning quilter but I lay out my entire quilt and then number my pieces using fabric chalk--that way when I start up again after 3 months I'm not lost---even though my fabric has been moved a dozen times. Once my daughter borrowed a few small squares to make doll clothes not knowing they were cut for a quilt--I wasn't numbered--didn't realize until it was too late and I had to undo several days worth of work....Darcy

Do you have unwanted fabrics or UFO's or PIGS? You can help supply quilts for the opening of the VA Hospital in Las Vegas. They need 300 quilts by the hospital opening.
As a special outreach of Quilts 4 Cancer, this group is making quilts for the opening of the new VA hospital. They are all volunteer with no sponsors. They need quilts 50"x 70" or larger and are looking for lots of Military and Red, White and Blue but will take ANYTHING in a quilt, top or blocks. They have many volunteers that can sew up your "UFO's" and "PIGS" as well as use up any unwanted fabrics.
If anyone wants to donate money (tax deductible), make the checks payable to Q4C and mail to P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041. More information about this event and for mailing supplies can be found on the Quilts 4 Cancer website.
I hope that you are able to help with this worthy cause for our veterans.
