Hi Quilters! I am really excited about teaching in Alaska on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. While I have been there several times, this will be my first time to present a seminar in Fairbanks. I love Alaska in the summer; the last time I was there it was in the 90's and I got a sunburn. We have a limited number of seats, so if you are planning to join us, you better register as soon as possible. And, next year our quilting cruise will be to Alaska. Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

When adding binding, leave a quarter inch of batting when trimming to pad the binding. It makes for a nicer edge......Kathy I use green painter's tape to mark lines on my quilts to hand quilt. You can get the tape in 1/4", 1/2" and so on. It leaves no mark on your quilt and actually helps to keep stitches straight....Meme

Kaye On TV.... We get a lot of phone calls and emails asking where to find Kaye on their TV. The simple answer is we don't know, (sorry). Here's what to do. Call your PBS, cable and satellite providers and ask them. If they don't show it, ask them to add it to their lineup. Our shows are called Kaye's Quilting Friends and Quilting The Kaye Wood Way.

Little Known Independence Day Facts....The Real Independence Day? The Declaration of Independence was announced on July 4th, though the formal signing didn't occur until August 2nd, and the colonies actually voted to accept it on July 2nd. So you may wonder - what day is the real Independence Day? Old Glory Did you know, that there have been 28 versions of the U.S flag to date, and that the most recent one, designed after Alaska and Hawaii joined the union, was the result of a school project? Robert Heft was 17 when he came up with the flag design in 1958. He originally got a B- on the project, but when his pattern won the national competition to become the next flag, his teacher raised his grade to an A. A Patriotic Death? Three American presidents have died on the fourth of July. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, in 1826. They had been rivals in everything, even about who would live longest. Adams' last words were about his long-time foe: "Thomas Jefferson lives!" In fact, Jefferson had died just five hours earlier, but Adams hadn't gotten the message. James Monroe is the third president to die on July 4th, but he died in 1831. From the Farmer's Almanac....

Today I played around a little. I have a new pattern from Kaye Wood, Brick Path. It's a pattern for A Quarter Quilt, quarter the bed size, fabric, time, and money. I really like the design, but I don't want anything that size, so to try out the pattern, I decided to just make a couple of blocks. I actually made three more, and I'm not sure what all I'm going to do with them all, but I really do like the design.

Sunday March 20 is our sew in at the Norwalk American Legion from 10 to 5.
Bring all of your red, white and blue!! Don't forget your sewing supplies. Also bring your appitite! Dont know what "Walter the
Waiter" will cook up for us this week but I am sure it will be fantastic as always!!!

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Joyce says: When sewing with Monofilament thread. You know the stuff that is clear and you cannot see the end to put in the needle? Do not work so hard. Just take out that permanent pen and color the end and you can see it to put it in the needle.

Sheila says: I keep a plastic grocery bag by my sewing machine, where I deposit fabric, batting and scrapbooking scraps. When I fill three bags, I donate them to a local daycare center for the children's arts & crafts. They're thrilled, and I'm glad it's all being recycled!.

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

This is the fabric I used to make the quilt below. I used the Starmaker 6 to make the blocks out of 6 layers of the same piece. Sewed three of them together then sewed the two blocks of three together. Making the multi designed blocks. Then I had to sew Y seams to get the quilt put together. All blocks are different. I plan to use the quilt as a ME SEE Quilt, a child looking for the animals that are in the border of the quilt, then finding them in the quilt....Joyce

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Julie says: Always write down where you bought which fabric. If you need or want more, you will be able to go back to the right store.

Marcia says: Try a practice block before cutting up all your fabric. You may find errors in the directions, that you don't like the way it looks, or the block is too hard or too easy for your purposes. You can then switch to another quilt pattern and have not wasted time and/or fabric.

Kaye's in Puyallup, WA this week. I remember last year at this time, when Kaye and Kayla were in Puyallup there were threats of a storm surge due to earthquakes in the Pacific Rim. It didn't happen, and that's a good thing, but I'll always remember that.

	Show & Tell... I would like to share this quilt I made. I work for the US Army and military doctors. One of the doctors is retiring and I thought what a fitting going away quilt. This design is "Starring the Eagle" by Dian Barnard and uses Kaye's Starmaker 6. The original design calls for an eagle applique, which I did on the first one I made. Then I came across the embroidery "Eagle Sketch", A Design by Lyn. I have attached a close up of that....Sydna

Kaye on Strip Piecing...

Strip piecing is what I do! When quilters realize that, their comment is "I've done that; it is such fun."

95% of the piecing I do is strip piecing and I haven't discovered all the possibilities of strip piecing.
What does that mean? Strip piecing means that strips are sewn together before any pieces are cut. And the type of pieces that can be cut number in the hundreds, many of which can be found in my Book and DVD, Starmaker Design Concepts. How do the Starmakers fit into the strip piecing concept? First strips are sewn together into strip sets; then the strip sets are cut in squares or rectangles OR with the Starmakers, cut into diamonds, triangles, stars, kaleidoscopes, etc, etc.... The opposite of strip piecing is template cutting, which is not nearly as accurate. Strip piecing is faster, easier, wastes less fabric, and is usually more accurate.
To strip piece a 9-patch block: Sew 2 different strip sets: sew a dark, light, dark strip set together; sew a light, dark, light strip set together. Cut these strip sets using a ruler and rotary cutter in segments that are the same width as the individual strips were cut. Each row of 3 squares is already sewn together.
To cut a 9-patch block: Using a square template or a ruler, cut individual squares. Sew 3 squares together into each of 3 rows. Sew 3 rows together.
If you haven't made at least 100 strip pieced quilts, you haven't really explored the concept of strip piecing;-)

Tips From Our Readers....

My Tip O' the Day is this, I love love love press and seal kitchen wrap. I use it to wrap up thread spools so they don't unravel. I use it to make baggies for projects I am working on. Especially Applique pieces. That stuff even works on the backside of rulers to keep them from sliding while cutting. It is great! I am sure that there are other uses I will find for it! Great stuff.....Vickie

Because I don't like to wear gloves when quilting I cut a piece of non-skid rubberized kitchen shelf liner about 4x6 and lay it between my hand and the quilt. Easy to move with my hand, and because it is no bigger than my hand, no chance of sewing it into the quilt....Rhonda

What in the world are these? I got lots and lots of questions last week. Most of you knew what the UFO was (Un-Finished Object) but I only had one person who knew what a PIG was (other than my farmers, lol). Well here's the official answer: A PIG is a Project In a Grocery (or Garbage) Bag!

This sounds silly and I am a beginning quilter but I lay out my entire quilt and then number my pieces using fabric chalk--that way when I start up again after 3 months I'm not lost---even though my fabric has been moved a dozen times. Once my daughter borrowed a few small squares to make doll clothes not knowing they were cut for a quilt--I wasn't numbered--didn't realize until it was too late and I had to undo several days worth of work....Darcy

Do you have unwanted fabrics or UFO's or PIGS? You can help supply quilts for the opening of the VA Hospital in Las Vegas. They need 300 quilts by the hospital opening.
As a special outreach of Quilts 4 Cancer, this group is making quilts for the opening of the new VA hospital. They are all volunteer with no sponsors. They need quilts 50"x 70" or larger and are looking for lots of Military and Red, White and Blue but will take ANYTHING in a quilt, top or blocks. They have many volunteers that can sew up your "UFO's" and "PIGS" as well as use up any unwanted fabrics.
If anyone wants to donate money (tax deductible), make the checks payable to Q4C and mail to P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041. More information about this event and for mailing supplies can be found on the Quilts 4 Cancer website.
I hope that you are able to help with this worthy cause for our veterans.

I made this jacket from the project you featured last summer from Nannette called Fractured Bargello. I made it for my mother-in-law and included fabric from which I made my wedding dress. It was a fun project, and I have two more lined up to do next. It's a great way to use up 1/2 yd impulse buys!....Louise

Tips From Our Readers....

I have a tip for anyone who needs a template and wants to use clear plastic. I came across this idea when I was looking for a piece of plastic I wanted to cut out as a template for making baby bibs. I make several for craft fairs and embroider on them, so I like the clear plastic so I can make sure the design is centered when I am about to cut out the pattern after I embroidered the design on the cloth. Since the size of the bib I make is larger than the normal 8.5" x 11" that you can find in the fabric stores, I decided to look for those clear, flexible cutting mats you can buy in most discount stores. It's perfect and does the trick - and is less expensive than what the fabric stores sell their templates for....Rita

Funny Stories From Our Readers....

I've sewn for a few years and everyone has done this once in awhile I know. Well I am making a quilt with alot of smaller pieces and I decided to chain sew the many small pieces. I am doing so well and sewing right along and I am so proud of myself for I am getting quite a bit done. I am almost done with the trillion pieces and low and behold, my bubble has burst! I look behind my sewing machine at my pile of fabrics and it is a big pile of nothing sewn together. I ran out of bobbin thread on the second section I sewed. I was so mad I left it right there and did not come back to it till a week later. So much for getting the quilt finished in a timely manner. A lesson learned!....Irene

Hi Quilters,

I just returned from Paducah, also known as Quilt City USA. For those of you who have not yet made the trip to the AQS Show, you should put it on your wish list.

The whole town of Paducah becomes a study in quilts. There are venues all over town from the main AQS Exhibits at the convention center to the Rotary Club. Quilts are hanging all over town-in restaurants and many other shops. A must-visit is the Quilt Museum on the banks of the river. Classes are offered in many places. I taught a sit-and-sew Teacher Certification class for the Spinning Diamonds, a lecture on Fussy-cut shapes in quilts and the All Star Review, where I gave tips on matching seamlines without pinning.

A must-do for me is a trip to Pattie's Restaurant, where they feature the 2" thick pork chop. We made our reservations in February to get into the restaurant during Quilt Week. This is my plan: order the 2" pork chop, baked potato and spinach salad. They also feature home made bread in a flower pot with strawberry butter. Since their deserts are to die for, I order the coconut cake. Then I save half of everything to take back to the hotel-that's my lunch for the next day. It works for me.

This year, some of the vendors and quilts were housed in the "marshmallow", which is an air supported gigantic tent. This was needed because the vendors could not be in the Executive Inn next door, because it will soon be torn down.

And of course, most people got out to the park to visit my friend,
Eleanor Burns. She put on free programs several times a day and had great prices on fabrics. El also has a full time shop in Paducah, so you can visit it all during the year.

Tips From Our Readers....

I use the eyebrow razor to rip out seams (even 1.0 tiny seams). It does not cut you so it's safe around children. Practice using it, it is soooooo simple to use. The end can be used to turn corners and I even use it to press creases that are used for measuring and placement....Betty Rose

I've never had a problem with my spool slit because I always mark my spool slit with a magic marker. That way you know which way to put your spool on the spindle. Then you can always put the thread back in the slit when you have finished with that color of thread....Marie

My sewing blooper: I have been making boxers for my 26 year old grandson since he was 15. This last pair turned out to be for a left handed person. (The opening in the fly was on the left side instead of the right!) He is left handed and I sent them to him anyway. He got a laugh out of it....Barbara

Chicken in a Bowl

What would you think that was? I thought it would be like chicken pot pie, so I ordered it. Wrong! The waitress asked, "Are you sure that's what you want? It's a chicken in a bowl." And that is what it was. A whole chicken sitting in a bowl of clear broth. If I had had the same waiter as last week's story, he would have said nothing, and just brought me something else to eat.

I've Learned...
Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them, and less with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
No matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.
We don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.
If you don't want to forget something, stick it in your underwear drawer.
No matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get farther in life.
The people you care about most in life, are taken from you too soon.

Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.
You shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret, it could change your life forever.
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
Sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their actions.
Many things can be powered by the mind, the key is self-control.
