Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Eileen says: I save the triangles cut from piecing binding, or when putting a small square on the corner of a larger square or rectangle then sewing diagonally, and any small pieces and inch or so wide. I use these as leaders and enders. It keeps my fabric from being poked down into the hole on the throat plate, AND I end up with pieces for a scrappy quilt. The triangles sewed together make a Friendship Star.

Sue says: Do not be afraid to ask questions from the internet, your local quilt shop, and other quilters on forums all have been a great help to me because I am new to quilting.

Did You Know??

It would be a perfect quilting world, if all of our rows were equal in length. But...we live in the real world, where rows may not be the same length and that's fine. Quilting is supposed to be fun and we all know, "ripping out" definitely is not! To help improve your skills, here are some thoughts to consider when you're having problems.
1) Were all the strips cut the same width? If not, maybe you need to practice your rotary cutting.
2) Were all the seam allowances the same? Once again, practice makes perfect when it comes to sewing.
3) Did you press your strips without steam, from the right side of the fabric?
4) If you do have to trim your strips, make sure you trim the top and bottom, equal amounts.
Checking these things can save you a lot of time and maybe a big headache too!

Do you remember the kaleidoscopes you played with as a child? How the patterns and colors mixed and blended into something else each time you looked at it? Now you can recall them again in this quilt pattern from Kaye Wood called Kaleidoscope. With this beautiful array of patterns and colors, you can see a new design every time you look at it. Today I played around a little. I have a new pattern from Kaye Wood, Brick Path. It's a pattern for A Quarter Quilt, quarter the bed size, fabric, time, and money. I really like the design, but I don't want anything that size, so to try out the pattern, I decided to just make a couple of blocks. I actually made three more, and I'm not sure what all I'm going to do with them all, but I really do like the design.

Sunday March 20 is our sew in at the Norwalk American Legion from 10 to 5.
Bring all of your red, white and blue!! Don't forget your sewing supplies. Also bring your appitite! Dont know what "Walter the
Waiter" will cook up for us this week but I am sure it will be fantastic as always!!!
If you are ready to start a new quilt bring your fabric requirements so you can pick out some new fabric. We ordered some new fabrics last week. We are hoping to have them for you at this months sew in!

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Joyce says: When sewing with Monofilament thread. You know the stuff that is clear and you cannot see the end to put in the needle? Do not work so hard. Just take out that permanent pen and color the end and you can see it to put it in the needle.

Sheila says: I keep a plastic grocery bag by my sewing machine, where I deposit fabric, batting and scrapbooking scraps. When I fill three bags, I donate them to a local daycare center for the children's arts & crafts. They're thrilled, and I'm glad it's all being recycled!.

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

This is the fabric I used to make the quilt below. I used the Starmaker 6 to make the blocks out of 6 layers of the same piece. Sewed three of them together then sewed the two blocks of three together. Making the multi designed blocks. Then I had to sew Y seams to get the quilt put together. All blocks are different. I plan to use the quilt as a ME SEE Quilt, a child looking for the animals that are in the border of the quilt, then finding them in the quilt....Joyce

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Julie says: Always write down where you bought which fabric. If you need or want more, you will be able to go back to the right store.

Marcia says: Try a practice block before cutting up all your fabric. You may find errors in the directions, that you don't like the way it looks, or the block is too hard or too easy for your purposes. You can then switch to another quilt pattern and have not wasted time and/or fabric.

This sounds silly and I am a beginning quilter but I lay out my entire quilt and then number my pieces using fabric chalk--that way when I start up again after 3 months I'm not lost---even though my fabric has been moved a dozen times. Once my daughter borrowed a few small squares to make doll clothes not knowing they were cut for a quilt--I wasn't numbered--didn't realize until it was too late and I had to undo several days worth of work....Darcy

Just because it's a quilt pattern doesn't mean it has to end up as a quilt! This contest will end on Feb 28, so hurry! Don't think you can make the deadline? Quilting For Charity....

Do you have unwanted fabrics or UFO's or PIGS? You can help supply quilts for the opening of the VA Hospital in Las Vegas. They need 300 quilts by the hospital opening.
As a special outreach of Quilts 4 Cancer, this group is making quilts for the opening of the new VA hospital. They are all volunteer with no sponsors. They need quilts 50"x 70" or larger and are looking for lots of Military and Red, White and Blue but will take ANYTHING in a quilt, top or blocks. They have many volunteers that can sew up your "UFO's" and "PIGS" as well as use up any unwanted fabrics.
If anyone wants to donate money (tax deductible), make the checks payable to Q4C and mail to P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041. More information about this event and for mailing supplies can be found on the Quilts 4 Cancer website.
I hope that you are able to help with this worthy cause for our veterans.

Well, Kaye's off on her newest adventure. Can't say too much about it yet, but trust me, you'll LOVE it!

On Sale This Week....
Soldier's Pride - 7.95 off!

This book is so much more than a book of quilt projects. Written by Karen Dever, the book is dedicated to all the servicemen and women of the past, present, and future as they protect our country.

This book includes instructions for seven different projects. The projects are everything from table toppers to wall hangings to lap quilts to samplers. The blocks are both pieced and paper pieced, so there is something for everyone. If the history of a block is known, it is stated, and all illustrations are in color.

As a touching tribute, the book also contains photos of soldiers and sailors whose family members had a hand in contributing to this book.

The blocks are also suitable for a Block of the Month program, and Karen details what is needed. Also included is a list of organizations distribution quilts to our military.

Ask Kaye...

Jean asks: Just a quick question. I made 1 quilt with Kaye's pattern the 6 HOUR QUILT. I want to make another one but this one about queen size. Can i cut the strips 12" wide without a problem to the quilt pattern?

Kaye answers: 6 inches is close to the maximum width you should use. If you use 12" wide strips, you will have to quilt the strips to keep the batting from shifting. It will take lots more time than 6 hours if you also have to do lots of quilting stitches.

	Show & Tell... I made my granddaughter a quilt for her twin bed and gave it to her for Christmas in 2004. I couldn't find a picture to send you so went to their house with my camera. She now has a queen sized bed and has figured out how to use her quilt sideways on that bed. It was the second quilt I ever made....Jane

Ask Kaye...

Sally asks: Is there a rule of thumb for using topped and topless triangles?

Kaye answers: Let's look at why we use topless triangles. They are used when 2 or more strips are sewn together into a strip set. The strip set is used to cut triangles. In this case, topless triangles will give you a triangle that, when sewn to other triangles, has equal finished width pieces within the triangle. In other words, a seam allowance is built into the triangle so the small piece at the top of each triangle does not finish to a narrower width.
There is no reason to cut a topless triangle if the strip being cut is a single strip of fabric. In this case, cut a full triangle with
top.

	Show & Tell... This was a true quilt-as-you-go quilt. I wanted to do something with pictures, so I used my 3 grand children and made it out of 12 blocks. At this point I wasn't sure if it would be a wall hanging or a quilt. I sewed the picture on the batting with the backing then sewed a black border also. Next I decided to do something with decorative stitching. I liked it so much I attached it together with the centre. From there I laid it on the bed and created the rest. I was really proud of this quilt seeing that I was only a beginner. My mother-in--aw was the lucky one that got it for Christmas in 2006 and it looks really rich on her bed; so rich that she sleeps in another room so she can keep it clean for when she has company over. My specialty was garment sewing but to this day I do mostly quilts and enjoying it....Nancy

Tips From Our Readers....

Binding my quilts hint: I use a needle holder box that is magnetic inside, I thread 5-6 needles put them in the box so I don't drop any of them and close the lid. This helps so much because you already have a lot of needles threaded ready to go for the binding. To me it's faster and it seems I'm not always stopping to thread needles all the time. This helps me so much because my fingers on my left hand are numb and this helps get me started. Love hints!!....Shirley

How Kaye Chooses Fabrics For The Back Of Her Quilts....

If you want your wonderful quilting stitches to really show up, use a solid all-cotton fabric.

They now manufacture 120 inch wide fabrics for the back of quilts that is great if you want a seamless back.

If you want your less than perfect quilting stitches to be hidden, use a patterned fabric.

The back does not have to be all the same fabric. Some quilters like to use extra blocks to piece into squares and rectangles for a decorative back. Or several large pieces (the width of the quilt) can be sewn together to fit the quilt.

I like a patterned or a batik fabric for the back of my quilts. Then when the quilting is done to accent the front, a secondary quilting pattern is formed on the back. It makes the quilt reversible.

For a lap robe for the sick, consider flannel for the back (with or without batting). It won't slip as easily and will be warmer.

So, now that the quilt top is finished, it is your choice what you do with the back.

Rising From The Mist

Kaye, On Borders....

Borders act as a frame for the center of the quilt. They also can increase the size of the quilt. The border area can be made from one fabric or from several fabrics sewn together. They can be narrow or wide. On some quilts, the border can be as wide as the drop from the top of the quilt.
Borders can be pieced with a quilt design, or just a repeat of a single quilt shape, like my Jumping Jacks Quilt.
A border can be a combination of pieces and strips, such as my Rising From the Mist Quilt.
Fabric used in the border should coordinate or contrast with the center of the quilt, but the fabric does not have to have been used in the center of the quilt.

	Show & Tell.... I have had Kaye's heart shapes for years and never opened the package. Today I was finishing up the attached wall hanging and remembered those shapes. It took me longer to find them than to do the stitching! I have moved to another state in the meantime. But, I did find them and used them to make heart shapes to quilt in the background and also for the heart on the door. And I saved out the pattern to make a baby quilt for a new grandchild due at the end of March. The shapes were a LOT easier to use than folding a piece of paper and cutting until I got a heart shape I liked that would be the right size....Jeanne
More projects using my new View and Do Hearts. I spent my snow day making fleece blankets for grandchilren's January birthdays and a new baby to come. The light green is for a baby and I used the second size of the hearts, fussy cutting some scraps and appliqueing them to the green fleece. The pale blue one also has hearts in two sizes, with tool fabric fussy cut in the heart shapes and appliqued. Fleece is inexpensive, quick to sew, the shapes made it so easy and fast, that I got all the ones in these pictures plus some more done in one day....Jeanne

Tips From Our Readers....

On label making.. did you know the gel pens they sell in the school supplies, will not wash out... they are great for doing labels, even blocks if you don't want to embroidery, decorate children's clothing...... I have one trial piece of cotton that I drew on and have washed over and over and its still there...bright as ever. It has to say "Gel" pen on the package. But they are wonderful. The key is do not press hard when you are using it on fabric; press lightly and the gel just flows on and it will not run....Jo

Choosing Colors For Your Quilting Projects....

This week I'm going to tell you how Kaye chooses colors for her quilts, but first, you have to understand that her sewing room quickly becomes a disaster area. This likely doesn't surprise any of you, however it is an innovative technique, so stay with me.

Kaye will take one or two fabrics that she wants to use for her quilts and lay them out on her table. Then she will literally grab anything and everything off the shelf to find what she likes. This technique results in some very interesting color and pattern combinations, as well as a totalled out sewing space, but no matter.

Kaye's version of this process....

I usually start with a multicolor medium to large size print. Then I pull fabrics that will coordinate, keeping in mind my color ratio-60% medium colors; 15% dark; 15% light; 10% accent color. That is just a guide line. I like a variety of size prints, stripes and blenders.

Sometimes in the midst of choosing fabrics, my multicolor print changes. Then one by one, the others change. But choosing the fabrics is almost as much fun as making the quilt.

Funny Stories From Our Readers....

When my baby boy was born I wanted to make him a textured quilt using different fabric. But as I had never made a quilt before, I thought maybe it would be too hard to use different fabrics as the seams would have different thicknesses. So I figured I would make a normal quilt and applique it with different fabrics so I would end up with different textures. I found this great tutorial on appliqued circles and thought this would be perfect. I could not spend much time on the sewing machine because of the baby so a little hand sewing would be good. Well, the hand sewing probably would be great but until now I have not gotten that far. In order to applique the circles, freezer paper and spray starch is used. So there is alot of pressing to do. Pressing again isn't something I can really do with the baby around. When I FINALLY had the chance to do some of the circles I had to figure out that the whole tutorial works great for regular cotton quilting fabric - but not really well for other fabrics. There I was with my circles that did not want to stay where they were supposed to be. That is the quilt as it is at the moment. My baby is now already 7 months old and for him to be able to enjoy his texture quilt I really would have to hurry and find yet another way to somehow incorporate some texture without too much trouble....Miss Muffin
