Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Eileen says: I save the triangles cut from piecing binding, or when putting a small square on the corner of a larger square or rectangle then sewing diagonally, and any small pieces and inch or so wide. I use these as leaders and enders. It keeps my fabric from being poked down into the hole on the throat plate, AND I end up with pieces for a scrappy quilt. The triangles sewed together make a Friendship Star.

Sue says: Do not be afraid to ask questions from the internet, your local quilt shop, and other quilters on forums all have been a great help to me because I am new to quilting.

Did You Know??

It would be a perfect quilting world, if all of our rows were equal in length. But...we live in the real world, where rows may not be the same length and that's fine. Quilting is supposed to be fun and we all know, "ripping out" definitely is not! To help improve your skills, here are some thoughts to consider when you're having problems.
1) Were all the strips cut the same width? If not, maybe you need to practice your rotary cutting.
2) Were all the seam allowances the same? Once again, practice makes perfect when it comes to sewing.
3) Did you press your strips without steam, from the right side of the fabric?
4) If you do have to trim your strips, make sure you trim the top and bottom, equal amounts.
Checking these things can save you a lot of time and maybe a big headache too!

Kaye's in Puyallup, WA this week. I remember last year at this time, when Kaye and Kayla were in Puyallup there were threats of a storm surge due to earthquakes in the Pacific Rim. It didn't happen, and that's a good thing, but I'll always remember that.

	Show & Tell... I would like to share this quilt I made. I work for the US Army and military doctors. One of the doctors is retiring and I thought what a fitting going away quilt. This design is "Starring the Eagle" by Dian Barnard and uses Kaye's Starmaker 6. The original design calls for an eagle applique, which I did on the first one I made. Then I came across the embroidery "Eagle Sketch", A Design by Lyn. I have attached a close up of that....Sydna

Kaye on Strip Piecing...

Strip piecing is what I do! When quilters realize that, their comment is "I've done that; it is such fun."

95% of the piecing I do is strip piecing and I haven't discovered all the possibilities of strip piecing.
What does that mean? Strip piecing means that strips are sewn together before any pieces are cut. And the type of pieces that can be cut number in the hundreds, many of which can be found in my Book and DVD, Starmaker Design Concepts. How do the Starmakers fit into the strip piecing concept? First strips are sewn together into strip sets; then the strip sets are cut in squares or rectangles OR with the Starmakers, cut into diamonds, triangles, stars, kaleidoscopes, etc, etc.... The opposite of strip piecing is template cutting, which is not nearly as accurate. Strip piecing is faster, easier, wastes less fabric, and is usually more accurate.
To strip piece a 9-patch block: Sew 2 different strip sets: sew a dark, light, dark strip set together; sew a light, dark, light strip set together. Cut these strip sets using a ruler and rotary cutter in segments that are the same width as the individual strips were cut. Each row of 3 squares is already sewn together.
To cut a 9-patch block: Using a square template or a ruler, cut individual squares. Sew 3 squares together into each of 3 rows. Sew 3 rows together.
If you haven't made at least 100 strip pieced quilts, you haven't really explored the concept of strip piecing;-)

Tips From Our Readers....

My Tip O' the Day is this, I love love love press and seal kitchen wrap. I use it to wrap up thread spools so they don't unravel. I use it to make baggies for projects I am working on. Especially Applique pieces. That stuff even works on the backside of rulers to keep them from sliding while cutting. It is great! I am sure that there are other uses I will find for it! Great stuff.....Vickie

Because I don't like to wear gloves when quilting I cut a piece of non-skid rubberized kitchen shelf liner about 4x6 and lay it between my hand and the quilt. Easy to move with my hand, and because it is no bigger than my hand, no chance of sewing it into the quilt....Rhonda

UFO's and PIG's - You Wanted To Know!

What in the world are these? I got lots and lots of questions last week. Most of you knew what the UFO was (Un-Finished Object) but I only had one person who knew what a PIG was (other than my farmers, lol). Well here's the official answer: A PIG is a Project In a Grocery (or Garbage) Bag!

This sounds silly and I am a beginning quilter but I lay out my entire quilt and then number my pieces using fabric chalk--that way when I start up again after 3 months I'm not lost---even though my fabric has been moved a dozen times. Once my daughter borrowed a few small squares to make doll clothes not knowing they were cut for a quilt--I wasn't numbered--didn't realize until it was too late and I had to undo several days worth of work....Darcy

We've got a few projects being submitted, don't miss out on this one!

Quilting For Charity....

Do you have unwanted fabrics or UFO's or PIGS? You can help supply quilts for the opening of the VA Hospital in Las Vegas. They need 300 quilts by the hospital opening.
As a special outreach of Quilts 4 Cancer, this group is making quilts for the opening of the new VA hospital. They are all volunteer with no sponsors. They need quilts 50"x 70" or larger and are looking for lots of Military and Red, White and Blue but will take ANYTHING in a quilt, top or blocks. They have many volunteers that can sew up your "UFO's" and "PIGS" as well as use up any unwanted fabrics.
If anyone wants to donate money (tax deductible), make the checks payable to Q4C and mail to P.O. Box 4702, Pahrump, NV 89041. More information about this event and for mailing supplies can be found on the Quilts 4 Cancer website.
I hope that you are able to help with this worthy cause for our veterans.
