Today at the cabin : cold and sunshine! Beats cold and cloudy and rainy. Woke up to a snow covered ground again this morning, but the water troughs weren't frozen over. Winter is coming, but I have soooo much to do to get the farm ready! And tomorrow.... Deer Season starts.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Kaye meets many people and sees many things while she travels. She always comes back with a couple of humorous stories to tell. Here is one of them.

Teaching Seminars

My quilts usually are in suitcases, ready to go with me when I do seminars or teach classes. Only once, thank goodness, did I open the suitcase and find that I had brought quilts for a seminar that was different from the one scheduled.

So, I did the only thing I could do. I taught the seminar that included the quilts in the suitcase. At the end, I just couldn't resist telling the audience what had happened. Several of them said they didn't think I was teaching what was scheduled, but it was OK and they learned a lot.

Many years ago, prior to a quilt show, the person in charge called me and said only two people had signed up for my class.

"Why do you suppose that is?" she asked.

"I don't have a clue."

Then she said, "Did you know that when I took the program to the printer I only had 15 pages with me. There were supposed to be 16 but we were short of time, so we printed the program with only 15 pages. The page that was missing was the information about your class."

That should have been a clue to her why my classes did not do well. I'd like to know how two people signed up when I wasn't in the program.

At this same show, there was a "meet the teacher" event.

Guess what? This event was also on "my" page, so no one knew about it. So only the 10 teachers were there. And you'll never believe what came next. The director carried on, complete with microphone, as if the room was completely full (maybe her eyesight was bad). She welcomed everyone (all 10 of us) and then we had to introduce ourselves, complete with microphone, to everyone present (all 10 of us) Keep in mind that we all travel and teach and each of us could have introduced any one of the 10 of us. And we all did it with a straight face!

Did You Know....

The first functional sewing machine was invented by the French tailor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, in 1830. Thimonnier's machine used only one thread and a hooked needle that made the same chain stitch used with embroidery. The inventor was almost killed by an enraged group of French tailors who burnt down his garment factory because they feared unemployment as a result of his new invention.

Q and A With Kaye....

Q: What would you consider the best choice of batting for a quilt that will be used and abused?

A: I would use a poly bonded batting. They seem to take the washing and drying better.

Q: I am making a round robin quilt and need the formula to make the four triangles that are added to the sides.

A: I would cut the strips 3/4" wider than you need. To figure out how much you need, measure from the edge of the square to where the next corner will be. Sew the strip on, then square it up.

Q: I have seen Kaye's show and wondered where she got the sewing machine thread carousel she uses.

A: Kaye got this handy device from Ray's Sewing Machine Center. Here is the address and phone number.

Q: How do you avoid puckering and gathering while machine quilting?

A: I use lots and lots of safety pins to baste the layers together. A spray adhesive would work well too.

Show and Tell....

This is the quilt we made in the Las Vegas Certified Teacher Training Class. Then I came home and made one for my kitchen table (correctly)
Love this pattern. I want to make another as a center for a queen quilt. I used Kaye's Savage Star pattern......Grace

One day in 1849 Walter Hunt wanted to pay a fifteen-dollar debt to a friend. So he decided to invent something new.

From a piece of brass wire about eight inches long, coiled at the center and shielded at one end, he made the first safety pin. He took out a patent on his invention, sold the rights to it for four hundred dollars, paid his friend back and had three hundred eighty-five dollars to spare.Then he watched his latest brainstorm go on to become a million dollar money earner for someone else.

When It Comes To Thread Choice....

Your fabric will influence the type of thread you select. Heavy weight fabric requires a heavyweight thread and lightweight fabric requires a finer thread. Very light weight or sheer fabrics are best sewn with a very fine needle and an extra fine thread. Using the correct thread size may reduce puckering, a problem frequently encountered when sewing light weight fabrics.
