Today at the Cabin : I could whine on and on about the weather, but I'm sure you've heard enough of that. So I guess I'll do it anyway! As I write this, yes, it is snowing. As I write this, yes, I am tired of it. After last week's rain all of the previous snow has turned into a skating rink. This time of year I wonder if Mother Nature will ever relinquish her assault on those of us lucky enough to live up here in God's (frozen) country!

Q: What is a "frogstitch" ?

K: This is a cute term, though I must say, not much fun! A frogstitch, as in rip-it, rip-it, rip-it, is when you have to undo a seam.

Q: I have heard the term, "bearding" so many times and still do not know what it means. Can you help?

K: Bearding is bits of the batting that are showing through the top and/or bottom layer of your quilt. This can often be avoided by buying a higher thread count fabric and using dark batting for darker fabrics. This is also usually associated with using synthetic batting.

Q: What is a burn test and why would you use it?

K: If you are not sure about your fabric, you can use a burn test to determine the type of fibers it is made up of. Just take a match and burn a sample of the fabric. When wool and cotton are burned, a gray smoke is emitted and an ash residue is left. Synthetic fibers will burn a black smoke and it might smell like burning plastic. Synthetic fibers will also leave a shiny black residue along the charred edges of the fabric.

Show and Tell....

I was asked to make this quilt for my daughter’s best friend. Her mom's mom had died and the fabric in this quilt was from all her "retirement home" polyester dresses. Almost all the fabrics had shades of purple or rose in it, they were butt ugly. When I finally got the dresses all cut apart and found enough pieces of fabric to make the squares, I assembled them together. There was one dress that was black & white and one that was green & white, and the rest were the purple tones. So I placed the black & white square in the centre of a nine patch and surrounded it with the purple tones. I then surrounded the blocks with a one inch border of the green and white dress fabric. By the time the quilt was put together we considered it so ugly that it was beautiful. I then backed it with a rose piece of fabric. When my daughter's girlfriend picked up the quilt, she burst into tears. Her gramma's name was Rose. She gave the quilt to her mom and it has a special place in their home, and lots of memories.

Bottom line, a very ugly quilt can hold more beauty than one could imagine.

Our Reader's Show and Tell....

Blazing Stars - What a wonderful way to do stars with the Starmaker 8 and they look like they're difficult to do, but aren't.Â I used an Aztec fabric and took the colors from it for the other fabrics. I had trouble with the squares and triangles, but once I got them figured out, it went really well. It's a great pattern and one that I know that I will make often. (That top edge really is straight, it's just the way it is hanging for the picture)....Margaret

Reader's Hints, Tips and Techniques....

Use a pipe cleaner to get lint from around the feed dogs and bobbin case. Just fold it in half around your finger (so it stays rounded rather than bending the metal directly in half) and insert the folded end into the machine to pull out those little lint devils. I find this much easier to get into tiny spots.....Elise

As a newbie quilter I have taped down a small sticky note pad on the 1/4" line so that I don't go over the sewing line. That way I get a true 1/4" seam line and I don't have to buy an extra foot....Janet

We get a lot of phone calls and emails asking where to find Kaye on their TV. The simple answer is we don't know, (sorry). Here's what to do. Call your PBS, cable and satellite providers and ask them. If they don't show it, ask them to add it to their lineup. Our shows are called Kaye's Quilting Friends and Quilting The Kaye Wood Way.

Did You Know - Copyright Concerns....

The subject of copyright as it applies to handmade items, is a subject dear to the heart of someone who is making a living through their creative efforts. A copyright protects an authors income, by giving them the exclusive right to control the reproduction of their work, whether they have created patterns, music, art, books or any other specialized design. For work to be copyrighted, it must be significantly original. An item or a technique so common it can be considered in the public domain, cannot be copyrighted. It must be something unique and distinctive, already in existence. Facts and ideas cannot be copyrighted, but the way they are expressed can.
Copyright infringement occurs when a person copies someone else's copyrighted item, without permission. To have a copy is not to have the copyright. For example, you can photocopy a pattern to cut up or mark, so you don't ruin the original, but not to give to a friend so she doesn't have to buy one. This would result in a loss of income for the author. It doesn't matter if the pattern is no longer available or if you do not charge for the copy.
You are free to use patterns from any book or magazine that you have purchased. However, if you make an exact copy or a close adaptation of an item from a pattern or book, the designer still owns the copyright on your work, and you must ask that designer for permission to publicly display it. Many books and patterns will give permission for personal use and non-profit use only. This means you can make an exact or a close item from the pattern and keep it, display it, give it to a friend or sell it. Some will tell how many you are allowed to reproduce and sell. You cannot mass produce items from the pattern and sell them commercially.
Changing the color scheme or size does not transfer the copyright to you. You would need to change the design enough so that it is not similar to the original. However, a technique cannot be copyrighted, so you may use another persons technique, to create a unique design of your own.
It is always best to give credit where credit is due. If you create a work based on someone else's design or technique, mention that in the label or display information. What goes around, comes around and who knows, someone may be inspired by YOUR work someday.
