Hi Quilters!

You LOVED our Ellen Medlock sale last week, and this week is guaranteed to be just as good! For quite awhile now, we've carried some of The Wooden Bear pattern line, and this week, we've put the entire line on sale! How's that? Adorably cute patterns and appliques for towels, quilts, wearables, aprons, seasonal designs, you name it. Kelly of The Wooden Bear is a genius when it comes to cute. Be sure to check it out!

And, we have their new book, Hugs and Holly!

If applique is your thing, this versatile collection will thrill you to the gills. And I do mean versatile! Just because a pattern is written for an apron or wallhanging, doesn't mean you can't take that applique and put it on a sweatshirt, pillow or towel! Their whole line revolves around this idea of versatility.

We have a little contest going on - guess a product and get a free sample, a big contest going on - send in pics of your ugly quilts and a blog giveaway. Plus TONS of new items in our store - Read On.....

My Dance Pattern

Quilting Question of the Week....

Q: I would like details for quilting a log cabin design.
K: I like to have my log cabins quilted in anything but squares. Try this: quilt a motif in the center of each block then quilt curves or circles around the center block.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

What machine techniques are special?

Along my quilting road, I've discovered that special techniques were needed for rotary cutting and machine sewing, some of which I developed, and some of which are general knowledge. Among those techniques are

  • Rotary cutting
  • Strip piecing to cut diamonds
  • Starmaker Master Templates for accurate angles, any size
  • Anchor seamlines
  • Perfect Y-seams
  • Finger pinning
  • Pinning with the grain line
  • Starter scraps
  • Sewing over seamlines

Cutting Techniques

Cut Strips

Strips for most projects are cut cross grain (from selvedge to selvedge). These strips are a convenient length (42"/44") to use in your piecing.

The lengthwise grain has less stretch and is sometimes used for vertical (up and down) sashing and border strips.

Strips need to be cut straight

If the fold of the fabric is visible, cut at right angles to the fold. It's OK if the selvedges do not line up.

If the fold is no longer visible, fold the fabric in half with the selvedges together. Lay the fabric down and slide the top layer to one side until the fabric lays flat.

Straighten the fabric by cutting it at right angles to the fold.

do this by placing a cross line on a ruler on the fold, and then rotary cutting the fabric.

The shorter the distance to rotary cut, the easier it is to cut accurately; so after straightening the fabric, fold the fabric in fourths and cut strips, lining up a ruler with the folded edge.

I like to undo one fold of the fabric and re-straighten the edge after cutting five or six strips. Then refold, restraighten, and continue cutting strips.

After a strip is cut, do an accuracy check.

Accuracy Tip: Fold the cut strip in half, end to end. Is the strip the same width at both ends and at the center of the strip?

Straighten the strip or strip set

Before cutting squares or rectangles, trim the end of the strip or strip set to straighten and remove the selvedge.

If you are cutting the strips or strip sets for diamonds, don't bother to straighten the ends.

Right handed quilters, trim on the far right side.

Left handed quilters, trim on the far left side.

Quilting Question of the Week....

Q: I have bought some vintage fabrics from a yard sale and was wondering if I should launder them before making them into a quilt?
K: Yes, definitely launder them if they need it, but remember that older fabrics especially, tend to shrink and their colors can run.

Q: I was wondering if a button stitch setting could be used for satin stitching.
K: The buttonhole symbol is not for satin stitching. Center the needle and adjust the width of the stitch as needed. Try a 3 width and adjust the length to a 1 or use the satin stitch feature on your machine if it is available.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

Do I Wash My Fabric?

I usually do NOT wash my fabric unless there is a real reason for me to wash it.

Some valid reasons to wash fabric:

  • You plan to wash your quilted project.
  • If you lose sleep about colors bleeding.
  • If your fabric has too much sizing.
  • If shrinking would be a problem.

If you decide not to wash your fabric, you have to be able to live with the above-mentioned problems.

If you wash your fabric, cut diagonally acrosee each corner before washing. This will keep the edges from raveling.

Tip From A Quilting Friend:

Mary Jane Holcomb shared this tip with us.

If you want to wash a large piece fo fabric, accordion-fold the fabric along one selvedge.

  • Pin the folds in place with large safety pins.
  • Hold the fabric by the pinned edge and let it hang.
  • The bottom selvedges will also fold; pin these.
  • Then wash and dry with no tangles.

Quilting Question of the Week....

Q: When I try to do perfect miter binding, it looks great on the top side but when I turn over the edge to whip stitch the back, I can't seem to get the corner to miter. What do you suggest?

K: Be sure to whip stitch one side all the way to the corner, then fold the other side down. It should miter perfectly.

Q: When you are tying a quilt and it's time to put the binding on, do you stitch all four sides of the quilt and then put the binding on?

K: I tie my quilts by machine by zig zagging over the yarn and then tying. I then overcast all 4 sides with a long zig zag stitch before adding the binding.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

What part of quilt making do you like?

Since this is supposed to be fun, you don't have to do it all. Each part of the quilt making takes different skills and thought processes, and you may want to partner with someone to work on a quilt.

I enjoy the planning and piecing of the quilt top, so that is what I do. I send all of my quilts out to be machine quilted by someone who likes to do the quilting.

Designing a quilt can be done in a variety of ways. I start with a particular technique, such as cutting diamonds. Some of you let the fabric direct you; some make a pattern that is already planned.

Starting a project takes a lot of thought; pattern and fabric choices, etc. When I'm in the starting mode, I start several projects.

Continuing a project takes attention to accuracy.

Finishing a project is like heaven to some of you; it's a sad ending to others.

Quilting Question of the Week....

Q: I have to travel on a long trip and wonder what is the best way to pack my fabric and quilts to keep them safe?

K: The best rule of thumb is to let the fabric breathe. Don't pack tightly in plastic bags and such. If the fabric needs to be protected, put it inside pillowcases.

Q: How do you trim a baby quilt with satin?
K: If you use a wide satin ribbon, fold the ribbon in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Encase the edge of the quilt inside the folded satin and topstitch.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

How Many UFOs Do You Have?

Some of you have a lot of UFOs (Un-Finished Objects); some have none; most of you have a few. Your personality type has a big influence on the way you approach your quilts.

If you have to finish one project before starting another, you have my sympathy. I like change, so I like to have several projects in the works; that way, I can work on whichever one talks to me that day.

I often hear "I will be so glad when this quilt is finished; then I never want to see it again."

News Alert!

Quilting is supposed to be fun and a stress reliever. My philosophical thought for the day: Some quilts do not deserve to be finished!

Call For Entries....

This is my "New Wave" quilt. Ever buy a bunch of fat quarters you love, but they're too pretty to cut up? This is a fun way to showcase them without cutting them up too small. I enjoyed sewing this quilt, and then it was fun practicing a different free motion or machine stitch in each row.....Sheila

"Circles of Black, Circles of White 3" - the third in a series of art quilts embellished with buttons and beads.

Beaded Quilts

Jeanette Shanigan, a designer-artist, teacher and author of numerous beading books, lost her mother in 1985 after a long battle with breast cancer. Since then, Jeanette has been donating her efforts to raising money and awareness for researching a cure. Jeanette founded the Bead-It-Forward Beaded Quilts Project in 2006. With the contribution of 31 beadwork artists, Jeanette created a quilt from one-inch butterfly-themed beaded squares and donated it to the Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer (BAABC) auction, held during the Bead Social at the Bead and Button Show in June. In that first year, the beaded quilt brought in over $1,000. Check it out HERE

Hi Quilters!

Gonna be another gorgeous day!

(Well, ok, yesterday it snowed, but today the sun is shining! Gotta stay positive, right?)

The tomato, pepper and lettuces seeds have been started, the grass is turning green (and I might even have to drag the lawn mower out this weekend...) and the trees are pretty much all budded out.

Yard cleanup - not so much!

Quilting Question of the Week....

Q: How do you make chenille?
K: You can do this in five easy steps.
1) Stack 6 pieces of fabric right sides up with the largest piece on the bottom.
2) Pin the fabric pieces together. With a ruler and a washable fabric marker, draw a diagonal line in the center from corner to corner. Continue drawing diagonal lines 3/4" of an inch apart until you have marked the entire square.
3) With a sewing machine, stitch along all of the marked diagonal lines.
4) Using scissors, cut the center of each row. (Do NOT cut the bottom piece)
5) Once all of the rows have been cut, machine wash and dry the fabric piece.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

What Fabrics Do I Buy To Feed My Stash?
  • Color families (fabric with shades and tints of the same color), for example all the blues would be in one color family.
  • Colors that like each otherAccent colors (they make you say "wow"!)

When planning my quilts, this formula sometimes helps:

  • 70% medium shades
  • 20% to 25% dark or light shades
  • 5% - 10% accent colors

Hi Quilters!

The grass is getting greener, and while there's still a skim of ice on the pond most mornings, spring is definitely on it's way in. Whew! What a crazy winter. And now, just in time for Spring, and just as the last of the snows are finally receding, what do we bring you? More snow!

Sorry, I just had to. I was wandering around the internet yesterday and bumped into the super cool pictures of Snow Quilts. You can see them all on our blog, along with the story HERE. As always, you can click on the pictures in the blog to biggify them!

Or you can browse the newsletter and find them sprinkled throughout. Enjoy them, I was just amazed. And I decided that even if they weren't real (looks real to me) they were still amazing......

Silhouettes of Southeast Alaska Wallhanging Pattern

Scherenschnitte, or German paper cuts, is the inspiration for the Silhouettes of Southeast Alaska.

There are geometric symbols for Northwest coastal native basketry patterns in each of the Silhouettes: tidelands in the top image, Orca teeth in the second, and footprints of the brown bear in the bottom image.

Silhouettes!

Orca Tablerunner and Wallhanging Pattern

This Orca design was created by the designers husband and whale watching partner.

Question of the Week....

What is the difference between an "E" book or "E" pattern and the regular version, and why aren't all patterns available in "E"?

The "E" stands for "electronic". So any EPatterns or Ebooks are ordered just as you would order a regular book or pattern but it is sent to you through your email address. You get either a link to download your ebook or epattern or you'll get the actual item attached to an email. Then, on your end you print it out, or store it on your computer. The best thing about these is the Instant Gratification feature, you get it NOW, and, there's no shipping charges!

We can only "E" Kaye's books and patterns, the other patterns and books we carry are not ours, so we don't have the rights to "E" them, sorry.

Tips and Humor From Kaye....

The Fabric Police

There is a law that you cannot leave a state without buying fabric.Soon after I menytioned this in a seminar, I got a phone call from a man who said, "My wife was at your seminar and I understand there is a fabric law."

"Every quilter knows about this law," I said.

"Well, I'm a state trooper, and no one at the post knew about this law, but when we checked with our quilting wives, they all knew"
