How To Store Quilts....

1. Quilts should be aired or vacuumed before storing. Use a low suction hand vac with a nylon screen to protect it from harmful pull. When airing, be sure the quilt is laying flat, protected from soil, and not in direct sunlight.

2. The ideal storage is a flat surface, properly lined with acid free material, large enough to have its own space.

3. When folding, use crumpled acid-free tissue in the folds for support. Refold the quilt every 3-6 months to minimize permanent fold lines. Rolling quilts is an option, but it does place stress on the entire quilt.

4. If the storage unit is made of wood or cardboard, it should be lined with several layers of washed, 100% cotton fabric. This is necessary to protect the fabric from chemicals in the wood or paper. Cotton liner should be washed semi-annually.

5. Covers of pre washed 100% cotton sheeting, muslin, pillow cases, or acid-free tissue paper are strongly recommended. These materials allow air to pass through and keep light and dust out. Plastic is not advised.

6. Keep the storage area clean and insect free. The herb Artemisia is a natural pesticide. Hang in the storage area or in a small bag. Do not let the bag touch the quilts!

Y-Seams....

They're not that hard and Kaye shows you how in our YouTube Channel

HERE

Here's a free tip sheet on Kaye's easy way to do Y-Seams!

Q and A With Kaye....

Q: Our church group had a hand pieced quilt top, machine quilted. The quilt top is about 2" squares and some of the fabric is not the best. We are now having trouble with wavy bindings. Any hints on how to fix this problem?

K: Cut the bindings on the straight of grain and sew with the binding on top. Make sure the binding is full as it is wrapped around. That should help with the problem.

Q: I am trying to find a way to print a drawing onto black fabric so I can stitch the drawing. Do you know of a method where I can actually draw, or print the design/picture on black fabric in white ink?

K: There are many quilting transfer pencils and chalks offered by Clover or Sulky to draw on fabrics. They come in white, silver and many other pastel colors. Most will brush or wash off. You should be able to pick one up at any quilt or craft store.

Q: Some of the fabric I have purchased for scrap quilts seems nice until it is laundered. Afterwards, it becomes real thin and flimsy. Should this be used in a quilt or would it be advisable to just count it as a learning experience. Would it help if I used a very thin stabilizer or interfacing? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

K: If this is meant to be a good quilt, I would chalk it up to experience. It will have no lasting power to it and when you wash it, there's a good chance it will become even more thin and flimsy. Plus, a thinner fabric like that does not hold stitches as well. If you are determined to use it, you could try spraying it with Magic Sizing. You can find it in the laundry aisle and will help your fabric have a little more "body" to it.

Black Rock Ferry Quilt Pattern - Brand New!

Some quilts feel like a journey. As far back as 1796, an old ferry was passage for many settlers who journeyed from the U.S. into Canada at Niagara Falls, Ontario to their new homes. Although many a spectacular tale was likely told as they reflected on their journey across the water, for them, the voyage was all about the destination. Do we sometimes get so caught up in getting to the other side that we fail to revel in the wonders of each day along the way? Enjoy the elements of this quilt as it comes together, allowing the movement of the ferry paddles to propel you forward, whatever your journey.

Show and Tell....

My grandson wanted a wallhanging for a computer teacher he had that year. The kids were always going back and forth about PC verses Mac. At the awards night he surprised her with this wallhanging/lap quilt. He had 12 pages of blog on PC verses Mac and he got it down to 9 pages. They are interesting to read. We just tied the quilt because I was running out of time. He seems to wait till last minute for something. I enjoyed doing this.

Big Sky Quilt Pattern

from

Prairie Quilt Mercantile

We used soft browns, warm blues, and bright neutrals in this quilt to pay homage to our Canadian mountain landscapes and big open skies. Pair scrappy blocks with yardage for alternating blocks and border.

Prairie Quilt Mercantile is our newest designer.

"We're not just quilters, we are artists. Fabrics are our medium. At what point as an artist do you leave "paint by number" behind, and progress into experimenting and truly "playing" with our fabrics? If you're going to buy a house, are you going to choose one that looks the same as every other house on the street? Absolutely not! You want the one with the cute shutters, or the inviting door, or the charming porch light. Can we not quilt this way? Of course we can! It just takes a little confidence, and a little faith (and a scrappy loving friend) , and after you make your first scrappy quilt, you just might find that you've graduated, changed, grown."

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Woke up to snow again. Yeah, I'm totally over it. I want to get my hands in the dirt. I want to walk barefoot through the mud after a rain and pick up worms for fishing. Q and A From Kaye....

Q: What kind of pen do you use to autograph a quilt?

K: I always use a pigma pen, available in most arts and crafts stores.

A pigma pen features waterproof, quick drying pigmented inks, that will not bleed through the thinnest of papers, or fabrics. Once the ink dries, it is smear proof, permanent and fade resistant even under sun light or UV light. Plus the tips do not dry out like most technical pens. When I went online and put "pigma pen", in the search engine, a number of places to purchase them came up. One retail store was Target, some quilt shops and a lot of arts and crafts places. You might want to consider ordering them online if you cannot find a local merchant that carries them.

Q: Any suggestions on what to do with very old, hand sewn quilted blocks?

K: Make sure you show them off! Either mount them in a frame or put them in between two layers of glass and display them on a stand.

Q: How do you piece batting together to make a long strip? Do you zigzag it together flat or use a seam?

K: I think you should overlap and then zig zag. You could butt them together but the zig zag stitch may not catch both edges. It is best to overlap.

Show and Tell....

I have been a "wannabe" quilter for about 35 years and finally completed my first quilt for my 82 year old Mom. I have done lots of hand quilting, mostly around panels, but had never cut, sewed, sandwiched and completed a quilt from scratch. I started this in January for Mother's Day, thinking I had plenty of time. We own a resort on Kentucky Lake and I just couldn't get all the piecing, applique and quilting done in time. I finished it in August and named it "Expression of Love". It is totally machine pieced and quilted. I used a couple of decorative stitches and my embroidery machine to do the label. I even used my budding free-hand quilting skills from a class I took in July. Mom loved her quilt and I am so glad to give it to her, knowing she will cherish it as much as I do her! I will be doing lots more quilting eventually. This is a picture of my Mom and me on the day I gave her the quilt. It is a 50" by 50" lap quilt for her blue and yellow lake room.

Q: I know what a walking foot for my sewing machine is, however I have never heard of a rolling foot. What is it and is it used for anything besides sewing in the ditch?

A: A rolling foot is an alternative to an Ultraglide Foot. People use it for more control and less friction when sewing on imitation leather, vinyl, elastic, and velvet.

Q: I had to move and all my material is packed away in boxes. Some of them I put in storage, in HOT Texas weather. I didn't get climate controlled storage. So my question is, will it hurt the material to stay packed away in boxes, whether in the heat or not, for a long period of time?

A: As long as the fabric is dry, it shouldn't cause a problem. Don't store it in plastic, as it can't breathe. Pillowcases are good, as are sheets, or even boxes. It will be like Christmas for you when you finally get it all unpacked!

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : I am really OVER the cold and damp. It's been raining for 3 days and it's just above freezing. Tonight through Friday we're supposed to get rain with temps below freezing. That's never a good thing. But tonight is our sewing group so a temporary reprieve will be had! As for the rain, I look at it this way, it washes the salt off the roads so I can ride my bike!

Hey, Kaye? What Are 3-D quilts?

Quilts can be considered 3-D because they are or because they appear to be.
Quilts can have the added dimension by having pieces that extend above the surface of the quilt, or the quilt can appear to be 3-D because of the way the colors are used (3-D look).

Pieces that extend above the surface of the quilt can be appliqued or pieced.

Applique pieces need to be finished by facing the piece with another fabric or by leaving the edges raw. These pieces extend (the edges are not sewn down). For instance with a flower, the center might be sewn to the quilt, but the leaves and/or flowers might be only attached at the stem. I have used this 3-D applique technique in my patterns "Stained Glass Diamonds", "Life in the Meadow", and "Tumbling Winds".

Pieced 3-D can be accomplished by folding the fabric and inserting the raw edges into the seam lines. The fold would extend above the quilt. A square folded diagonally might be used in pinwheel designs, such as my pattern, "Pinwheel Squares" and "Floral Stars".

3-D Look Quilt

Often, this look can be accomplished with the use of color and the arrangement of color. When you think you can look into a quilt, it is usually the color arrangement that does that. For instance, in my pattern "Stacking My Blocks", the dark, medium and light colored fabrics give a -D look. In "Braided Table Runners" and "A-maze-ing", it is the arrangement of dark to light shades. In "Chrysanthemum", the medium and light fabrics make each piece of Dresden Plate seem to fold.

Quilt Preservation....

Q: I am the fourth generation to inherit all the beautiful very fragile quilt squares in my family. They are crazy quilt fashion, backed by muslin but are too fragile to even think of putting together. Someone once told me you can make a fabric book of each one by a process museums use but I don't know where to look for the information. Some of these date back to the 1800's with satin squares depicting the event and date. Hopefully I can preserve them for the next generation but am now in my seventies and decided I had better get with the program and find out how to do it. Would appreciate any help you may be able to provide!

Please let us know how you would answer this question!

Email me at terrye@kayewood.com

Here are more answers:

Jacquelyn would use a plastic report cover.

Connie would frame them for all to enjoy.

Gloria: If i love those quilt squares I would take them to a hobby store and have them framed with the date. That way she could look at them all the time, and when it it time for them to be pass down the next person could enjoy them hanging on there wall and think of the the last person that took care of them.

Sue suggests contacting someone at a quilt museum that has the actual hands-on knowledge of how best to do this and ask for their information and guidance.

Annette: Maybe fuse a light weight muslin on the back of the blocks and transparent illusion on the top. Sew the blocks together, choose a backing and tie instead of quilting. This should stabilize it to be enjoyed for many years.

Maurine: thinking of the acid in things that could ruin old quilts/squares. I wonder instead of report covers if going to the pages for a scrapbook would be safer?

Sandy says; "There is a special quilt or fabric netting that used to be available that can be gently stitched over the fragile cloth. I haven't bought any for years though. Please don't store fabric in plastic as the humidity may cause mold. Write to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC or your favorite local museum for specific advice."

Thanks everyone for your awesome suggestions!

Have a great week, everyone!

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Well, it's still cold, but a lot of the snow is gone. The chickens have been let out of the coop and are happily scratching at the frozen ground. Where last week was snow, now there's quite a bit of dirt showing. Lots of piles of leaves for them to scratch around in and they are happy, happy, happy. The eggs these gals lay are so good (and healthy and nutritious too), way better than the store bought variety!

This week we are featuring a lot of our patterns by Far Flung Quilts. Also, a new designer in our shop, Aunties Two is on sale.

Also we've got quite a few "HURT" items that are in serious need of a good home. These are items that are fine, but the packaging is misprinted, ripped or torn.

Lots of cool new stuff Check It Out Pages too!

Q: I am working on a project using a reverse applique technique.

When the appliques are complete, I am finding it difficult to get all the paper off the back. Is there a real long term problem with allowing the paper to stay in there? Obviously it will not show once the batting and backing are attached to my block.

K: I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to leave the paper on. There are quite a few older quilts that I know of that still have paper in them. But if you are sewing the paper on, you might try using freezer paper and ironing it on instead.

Q: I used a washable marker and when I put my quilt in the washer, it still had marks on it....

Is it too late to try to do anything besides sew some decorative stitches on it, or should I start a new block that took hours to embroider. Hope you can help.

K: I have heard but never tried myself, that hairspray is wonderful for getting ink out. You spray it on, then rinse in cold water. Repeat as necessary. People have assured me this is a fool proof method.

Q: What is Broderie Perse?

K: Broderie Perse is a French term that translates as Persian Embroidery. This is an applique technique method where larger images are cut from a printed fabric and appliqued onto a new background fabric. This was especially popular in Europe when expensive prints came from SE Asia and India. By cutting them up and appliqueing them, it made them go further.

Quilt Trivia....

Quilted bedcovers offically became "art" in 1971, when the groundbreaking exhibition "Abstract Design in American Quilts" opened at New York City's Whitney Museum of American Art. New York Times critic, Hilton Kramer, wrote at the time: "...the anonymous quilt-makers of the American provinces created a remarkable succession of visual masterpieces that anticipated many of the forms that were later prized for their originality and courage."

The Shakers - widely recognized as master furniture makers, gardeners, and architects also quilted. "Shaker women wove more frequently, but they did quilt," says Sharon Koomler, curator of collections at Hancock Shaker Village, in Pittsfield, Mass.

Show and Tell....

This is the wonkiest quilt I have ever tried to make and caused me much stress. When I started I planned to make a trains, trucks, and buses type quilt for this small boy who said his favorite color was yellow. By the time I bought the fabrics and got started he had decided his favorite color was red and that he liked to fix things and enjoyed tools. So I bought a Mr. Fixit quilt kit and planned to add extra borders to that. By the time I was well started on that, the favorite color was still the same, but now he planned to be a "hunter of bear and a hunter of deer" when he grew up. So I just kept changing blocks around and adding things every time I heard something new until I got to an appropriate quilt size. So this quilt has carpentry tools, adult animals, baby animals, barns, plane, tractor, gardens, heavy equipment, and all kinds of colors. Never ever would I have tried to put these colors or fabric designs together by choice.

But, the family and the child like it I guess.

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Yeah, it's still snowing. I got out my seed catalogs yesterday, time to go through and get some ordered. I like the heirloom, organic varieties, but some of them just aren't really "northern" hardy. Our short growing season plays havoc with the tomatoes and peppers.

Q: What is a stiletto?

I'm sure they aren't referring to high heels!

K: A stiletto is a sharp, pointed instrument that is used to ease and hold seams as they pass under the presser foot to keep them in place. Some people use a seam ripper although I have heard of people using a wooden meat skewer with great results. CLOVER makes a stiletto/awl that works wonderful as a stiletto, and is great as an awl to punch holes in leather and fabrics.

Amish Quilt Trivia....

The Amish did not bring quilt-making to America. They learned it from their "English" neighbors.

Quilts are the third-largest source of income for the Amish, after farming and woodworking. Most Amish women quilt during the winter months, when gardening and farming chores have subsided.

Quilts are a traditional Amish wedding gift. Most women give each child at least one quilt to take to their new home.

When a family moves to a new Amish settlement, they may have to sell their quilts or store them away if they do not conform to the unwritten rules of the new church district.

Antique Amish quilts rarely if ever contain the depictive representations of everyday life commonly found in "traditional" American quilts. Clothing manufacturer, Esprit, founded by Amish quilt collector Doug Tompkins, was the only corporation to have it's own quilt curator.

The age of a quilt can be determined by what dyes were used to color the fabric. Early Amish quilt-makers used dyes from weeds, berries, and bark.

Show and Tell....

I've been trying to make this "Quarter Quilt" (Brick Path) using one of Kaye Wood's patterns for quite a while now. I was sure that I could whip it up in a weekend and if I hadn't been interrupted a kazillion times, I might have done it. But, I put the last stitches in the binding tonight, and voila! a new Quarter Quilt for the spare room.

It even matches the comforter quite nicely! Of course, the comforter will be coming off when the nice weather finally makes it's way to us.

The last QQ I made was flowery and I used a rose-red fabric and seeing as the spare room is most often used by my son, I thought it needed something a little more manly.

I loved how this pattern went together too, there's a 'twist' in the instructions, and I thought that was the most fun part but you'll have to order the pattern to find out what the twist is! The first pic is a close-up of the fabrics and the pattern; the 2nd is a pic of it on the bed.
