Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : The weather is cool, but beautiful, the pool has been filled and appropriately salted (in lieu of chlorine) and the grass is growing faster than I can keep up with it with my little push mower. I do love to mow the grass, it's fresh air, it's exercise and I love the smell. I also like (notice I said like and not love, lol) to rake up the clippings and feed them to my chickens, who are now in their prison pen because they like to dig and scratch up my freshly planted garden. They will stay there until the end of September or the first frost and the tomatoes are gone.

Kaye's Tips on Grainlines in Fabric....

There are two different grain lines in fabric. The lengthwise grain is the strongest and least likely to stretch; that makes it great for side borders in a quilt.

The cross wise grain goes across the width of the fabric (usually 42"-44" wide). This has a very little bit of stretch. Strips for quilt making are usually cut cross grain.

Any time fabric is cut off-grain, means it is not cut along one or both of the grain lines. The more off-grain the cut, the more stretch. The most stretch is on the bias (45 degrees off the grain line).

But in quiltmaking, it gets a little more complicated. Because of the way most quilting fabrics are made, they sometimes finish slightly off-grain. You have to decide if it is more important to cut it straight or the way the fabric "thinks" it is straight because of the finishing process. People who rip their fabric have the fabric as straight as it can get. But, the fabric does not necessarily "think" it is straight, and fabric remembers how it was finished.

This is what I prefer to do:

Let the fabric win this one and use it they way it "thinks" it is straight because this seems to cause less problems.

"Thinking" straight means to cut the fabric strips at a right angle (90 degrees) to the center fold.

To do this, lay the fabric as it comes from the shop with the fold at one side; the selvedges at the other side.

Place a ruler on the fabric so one of the cross-lines on the ruler lays on the fold.

Rotary cut across the fabric. Cutting at right angles to the fold keeps the fabric straight the whole length of the strip, without the dip that sometimes is at the fold.

I do not try to line up the selvedge edges, because they may or may not line up, depending on how the fabric was finished.

How To Cut Stars With Kaye's Starmakers....

Q and A From Kaye....

Q: How do you put a hanging sleeve or just simply hang a circle quilt?

K: You would make a half circle sleeve and sew it across the middle. Put a dowel in the sleeve that goes across the middle of the quilt. This will keep it stable and help keep it's form. Then bend a wire coat hanger and put it in the half circle.

Q: How do I accurately measure the finished top size, when setting up the back? I would like to do some creative applique on the back, but don't know how to position it.

K: Cut the backing 4-6" larger than the top. Fold in the fourths to find the center. That should help you position the applique.

Show and Tell....

I made this quilt as a gift for my husband's nephew's wedding in September 2011. I had seen the quilt made up in my LQS, and I fell in love with it at first sight. Fortunately, the fabrics were all on sale at the time! It came together quite quickly, and I had a local quilter do the quilting on her long-arm. It measures 50" square - just perfect for the newlyweds to snuggle under!

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : And this week, more rain and less sunshine. This is crazy. Most of the garden is in, so the rain is good, maybe we could arrange so the rain stays on the garden side of the house and I get sunshine in the front yard. Anyone with me? Oh yeah, I also spent a lot of time this morning dismantling the ducting in the basement as a kitten had fallen down the vent and gotten stuck in there. Life on the farm is NEVER boring!

Q and A From Kaye....

Q: If piecing is ok, should the seams be sewn down so the rod doesn't get caught while being inserted? If they should be sewn down, should the seams be pressed open first, or to one side?

K: Press seams to one side. Insert rod from the opposite side or sew down seam allowances.

Q: Is there a rule of thumb on what color of thread to use for the quilt top? I have never made a quilt and I am not sure what color of thread to use. The quilt top is in various colors of blues, greens and reds, with small amounts of beige.

K: Use gray for dark, beige or off white to piece light colors.

Q: Is there a guideline on how to figure the width of the sashing or binding to go on a quilt? For example, if there are 9 inch squares and 12 squares, what is the size of the binding that would go in between each one to make a wall hanging? Is there a formula for figuring this out?

K: Your sashing should be no wider than the size of the squares, and binding can be any width. It all depends on how you want it to look. If your sashing is wider than your squares, it tends to overcome your design a bit. When it comes to your border, sometimes a wider one pulls your design together more and accentuates your design. Your best bet is to lay it out before sewing them on. Try different widths and see how it looks with your squares. When you find one that work with it and is appealing to you, go with it.

Emily's No Problem Quilt

Kaye says; "If you have cruised to the Caribbean, you have probably heard someone say, "No problem, mon.".When I heard this in response to a question I asked, I thought it meant that I didn't have to worry and that they would take care of it for me. No, that's not what it means. It means, "They don't care, and why should you." But how does this apply to a quilt pattern? Sometimes we need to de-stress our lives, and a No-Problem pattern can help us to do that. It means that there is virtually nothing you can do wrong while doing this quilt. It is called a No Problem quilt! This is a great Pointless Project because there are no points to match and your seam allowances don't have to be perfect. It also is fun for using up your scraps or fat quarters. Make a memory quilt: Take this colorful, fun quilt to school or camp and have your friends autograph the blocks!"

Hi Quilters!

Today at the Cabin : Rain threatening outside. The sky is an overcast gray, there is a slight breeze and yes, I can smell the rain. New chicks have arrived on the farm, we have Rhode Island Reds (for eggs), Turkeys and Ducks, and Cornish Rocks (for meat).

I think baby chicks are my favorite. Exploring with my grandson in the barn the other day and we discovered a 2nd batch of kittens; just minutes old. Seriously, they were still being born. Normally we'd pick them up and cuddle and hold, but it's too early. We'll leave mama alone for a bit.

There's lots of room and pockets inside and, thanks to the side ties, you can adjust the top opening from wide to narrow to accommodate your purse-o-nal needs. (13" W x 9.5" H x 5" D)

For Janome 12000 Owners....

I asked Janome why does it take so many steps to locate the 1/4" seam on the Janome 12000?

Basically it is because the 12K is considered a full purpose TOL machine that is built for tailoring, home dec, crafting, embroidering, as well as quilting. So center needle position is considered the most common position.

Since the feed dogs are so much wider now, which makes for great control, the needle needs to be significantly moved to the right in order to use the "O" quarter inch foot. And once again since "piecing" is only one function of the machine, the quarter inch stitch was put into the quilting category as well as in the patchwork section of sewing applications.

And Janome has solved my problem -

If you want to always have the needle ready to go for the quarter inch seam, without having to go through the extra screens, simply follow these steps to create your Favorite Stitch.

1. Set function > Ordinary Sewing > page 6> turn on Favorite Stitch > OK

Now the machine will retain any changes made to the Utility stitches.

2. Select Utility stitch 1 or 4. (I like to use stitch 4 so that I still have straight stitch center needle position)

3. Touch Adjust and move the needle position to 8.3 > OK

Now the default of that stitch is changed to this new setting.

Now whenever you select that stitch it is ready to use for the quarter inch foot.

Quilt Hanging Sleeve by Machine....

1. After the quilt is quilted, this hanging sleeve is put on the back of a quilt entirely by machine.
2. The sleeve should be wide enough so the fold will extend from the top of the quilt to about 1/8" below a border seam on the front of the quilt.
3. Cut a strip this width. Cut the length of the strip approximately 6" less than the width of the quilt.
4. Fold under the short edges 1/4", press and stitch.
5. Fold and press the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
6. Pin the raw edges of the folded sleeve even with the top edge of the back of the quilt.
7. Stitch the sleeve to the quilt using 1/8" seam. The binding will cover this stitching.
8. Pin the folded edge of the sleeve about 1/8" below a seam on the front of the quilt.
9. Stitch in the ditch from the front of the quilt through the seamline, catching the folded edge on the back.
10. Finish the quilt by adding the binding. Perfect mitered corners are easy following my techniques.

Show and Tell....

Made this quilt for my grandson; he graduated this year.

Finished it right on time, the centre is from a kit, I had to make it bigger as he got a bigger bed.

Only second big quilt I have ever made, I will say it is Kaye Wood that has inspired me,

and I found out if I follow pattern directions it is quite easy. Thank you Kaye
